Cricket to Launch Android Phone

yeah right... Cricket phone made by Kyocera/Sanyo with some real help at XDA.

This phone sucks. There will be no support for it. Look at the roadmap of the major carriers in the US, this phone doesn't compare with none of them.

HTC EVO, iPhone 4g, etc... will be the new standard for smartphones for now on.

If this phone sucks what do you call all the other phones cricket has available?? This is way better than them. If the phone was made by a better comany such as samsung, htc or motorola it would prolley be really expensive since it will be a high end phone. The htc evo and iphone 4g will most likely with a 2 year contract cost more than this phone will retail to us.So just be happy with the improvements they are making so far. This phone is great to me since im in an aws area.

ditto---i am in total agreement with you "dman1111"

as i said, i own an htc eris,
to some people the eris runs an an "antiquated" operating system already
people can say it is already "outdated", "obsolete", etc.
the phone is great to me
one man's junk, is another man's treasure

i do not see how this new cricket android will not be the best phone cricket has introduced
only time will tell

as for support, i go back to the blackberry storm, that i was stupid enough to purchase when it first came out - where was the support? it took almost an entire year to give the phone an operating system that it should have had to begin with
by then i had luckily enough to have sold the phone on ebay
support is relative

yeah, great for AWS markets but that's it. Trust me there will be no support for this phone unless it's by you guys.

Don't get me wrong this is a great OS for Cricket, Android, but the actual phone sucks.

The only people wanting this phone are Cricket users.

Cheap phones rarely get support, look at the history.

--------EDIT-----------

Perfect example, what Cricket phone now is receiving a lot of support with modding, hacking etc...

You can't compare a Blackberry Storm and a HTC device against Kyocera.

Those are heavily marketed devices with good specs, and a large loyal following. Kyocera has none of that.

So, only Cricket customers would want a phone only released by Cricket... Maybe I'm not understanding the issue there...

What Cricket phone now needs or could use modding, hacking, etc...?

This is a big step forward for Cricket. For a company that started so small, in the past 2 years they've been making leaps (lol) and bounds forward.

Why knock a phone just because it's being released by a low cost pre-paid provider?
And everday day I have about 15 people call me and ask "Do ya'll got uh Android er uh Black-bury?"
MOST customers won't care that it's made by Kyo, they just want a phone that runs Android. And if you look at some of the other Android forums, the majority of the people there don't like the idea of hacking, modding, or Rooting their phones.
I think that everyone here on HOFO will hate it because of an unfair prejudice against Kyocera and their advanced cell knowledge, but the average Cricket user, they'll be just fine.

Meaning, there will be no real support for this phone. Maybe some cute wall papers and ringtones but thats it.

None, my point exactly. Glad we can agree.

I know, I have been with Cricket for 9 years.

I'm not, just don't want people praising this phone and saying it will be highly supported and modded.

Again, Android is a great OS. To be honest I haven't seen an Android site where rooting and hacking/modding isn't the goal.

Yes this phone will be great for the average Cricket user. For others, you can purchase a Hero for the same price.

^ Look up about 4 posts, never mind, here it is:

;)

^ Won't be the cheapest Android phone, HTC click comes in at $100 and below, not to mention other off brand phones.

Also on the plus side, Kyocera mentions they might offer 2.1 as a update. I doubt it though if this phone is only available to Cricket.

I know this is pulling up an old post. But I am glad I found it.
Really looking forward to this phone coming to Cricket. Sanyo made decent phones so I'm willing to give this one the benifit of the doubt.
And while a lot of people are slaming on it for not being top of the line. I understand cricket not thinking they can sell $500-$600 dollar phones to its customers.

After looking at specs. This phone looks to be about on par with the Droid and Hero that were released last year.(other than the 3.0 camera).
Sure not top of the line, but for the price and being an AWS phone. It can't be beat.

Now just need to wait until some of our cricket guys here can get there hands on it for a good review.

Well, it's been a while and I don't think any of us has seen an exact price (other than MSRP). Does anyone have any additional information regarding the price of the Kyocera Zio, and how much it will be after any rebates?

It seems like it's been a while without any updates. It's on Cricket's website, but they haven't really updated it since they put it up there.

Because of the type of processor used, I would say it would be more in line with the G1 or the MyTouch 3G but ~100mhz faster with a bigger screen. I'd say that's a pretty nice step up for cricket compared to the current lineup.

Complaining about this phone compared to an EVO or iPhone 4 is lame. Lets see, an iPhone 4 costs a couple hundred bucks up front but also comes with a nice 2 year agreement plus a phone bill no less than $84 and that is with 2GB data, limited minutes and 200 sms.

Cricket will give you a phone functionality equivalent to a MyTouch3G for ~$300(which in all honesty is not a horrible phone) with unlimited everything and for probably ~$20 less per month. And with no contract.

I'm actually pretty excited for this phone so that I can come back to cricket and to be able to buy a new fully supported cricket handset that is pretty decent (i'm tired of second hand phones, this is why I went to boost and bought a boost branded 8330. I tend to take better care of my phones than most).

HTC Legend uses the same processor and it seems to be getting good reviews.
I plan on picking one up, but we will have to wait and see the final product I guess.

I saw the engadget video and the performance looked pretty bad. In the Cnet video the performance looked better.
And intomobile says:
"We had a chance to play with the Kyocera Zio and I wasn’t expecting much from it, but I walked away pretty impressed.
The handset feels pretty good in the hand: it’s light, sleek and has just enough screen real estate to make the whole thing work."

Since all these took place at the same show..... who knows why engadget hated it, and the others thought it was ok?

1 good thing the phone has going for it, is it is using straight android. Kyocera isn't adding thier own skin, so upgrades should be easier to get.

My 2 biggest questions are (since this is crickets first smartphone).

1) Will Cricket handicap it in someway? remove android market and only allow crap apps from some Cricket store. I can think of many ways Cricket can screw its customers tryign to nickel and dime them.

2) How will Cricket and android updates work. With no custom skin you'd think it would be easy to just pop the 2.x update on it. But with Cricket....who knows?
