Cricket: Good or Bad?

Cricket just opened shop here where I live(El Paso, TX). A friend of mine asked me to find out whether or not this service was any good or not. I read some reviews, and most of them were pretty negative. One of the good reviews it got said that they use Verizons network, and they just leech off of it, which explains why their plans are so inexpensive... That sounRAB rather farfetched to me. Anyhoo, a lot of the bad reviews I read mentioned a terrible network(Dropped calls, roaming in areas where you should have service) and horrible customer service. I could really care less whether or not they're any good, I've got T-Mobile and am plenty happy with them. So, anyone got any info?

when were these reviews written? were they talking about your area? they may have come from an area where something got pooched or when Cricket was very new. I don't know about TX, but Cricket in Colorado seems pretty good. Nobody has complained to me about dropped calls or dead spots not shown on the coverage map. I'm pretty sure they do use their own network. You might tell your friend to go down to a cricket store in their area and ask them about service there. Then become very familiar with their retun policy (prolly no more than 30min of talk time on the phone) and take the phone to the places that they will be using it. If your friend lives in the city, they'll prolly be very happy with it...otherwise I would make sure I can return the hanRABet and then buy and test coverage where they want it.

The biggest drawbacks that I can see is that there is no data network and roaming is expensive.

Some people don't like the higher cost of the phone, but you also have to consider that there is no activation fee and *usually* the first month is free. And ofc no contract, no overages, no credit check, no deposit.

Ive used cricket in nebraska for a year now with no complaints. As far as roaming in a coverage area, make sure the phone is set to "home only" in network settings and the prob is fixxed.
