Employees are obviously the most important part of a manager’s responsibilities. Managers must be aware of any problems employees have, and learn to deal with them accordingly. Some of the worst problems managers have, deal with low morale among employees, but fortunately, there are ways to corabat these problems. Providing employees with a fun atmosphere may sound unnecessary, but actually has many benefits.
Creating a fun workplace means more than throwing parties and serving holiday treats. Today’s employees want to feel respected, feel that they matter, and to be kept informed. They want to be treated fairly and consistently among their co-workers and expect to be recognized for their contributes. Taking a little time out for fun and games will help your company succeed. When making work fun, exciting, and challenging for your employees, you will begin to see happier employees, less turnover, and higher productivity.
Employees generally want to know what is expected from them. A sense of trust and comfort can be obtained when everyone knows exactly what their responsibilities are for each authority. Managers should create a fair and consistent environment for all employees. They should make sure that everyone is treated equally, because the littlest bit of bias or favoritism toward that person or group could cause internal employee morale and possible legal cases. Developing policies and procedures is the easiest way for companies to minimize their problems with discrimination.
Whenever possible, managers should try to challenge their employees. Employees who feel challenged are encouraged to learn more skills and apply the ones they already have. People liked to be challenged, but they don’t want to be surprised with other expectations than what they were told in the beginning. Employees should be paid for the work they are expected for and reward them with praise and positive feedback. As you apply challenge you will realize that present employees will have the capacity to fill key positions within the company, which in return saves money and time with recruiting. Managers should be attentive and listen to each employee. Employees need to have their suggestions and ideas taken seriously because they are more likely to make better contributions to the company. Taking out the time to listen to employees is a weakness for bad managers and the strength for a good manager. The majority of the answers to the challenges faced by the company lies among the employees. Without hearing all their suggestions, problems may not be solved effectively.
Managers should be honest and direct in communicating the successes and failures with each employee. Being open and honest with them will show them their importance to the company and this will win you their respect. When managers have created a positive environment, this will give a sense of fun and trust within the company.
At this point, employees respond positively to communication of their successes and failures. If an employee does make a mistake, managers must provide a way in which he/she can learn from it. At this point, employees can feel frustrated or burdened by their failures, but a good manager can help them through this by providing outlets that make the office a fun and well-liked atmosphere. The possibilities to do this are endless, and some of the ideas could sound a little crazy. These ideas include things like creating a “bring your child to work day,” letting employees wear casual clothes on Fridays, company picnics or athletic tournaments, pajama party Tuesdays, and even showing cartoons during lunch time. These events give employees not only something to keep their minRAB off their actual work, but also give them a reason to look forward to coming into the office each day.
Another way to build company morale is to give the employees a chance to associate with one another outside the office environment. Monthly meetings could be held at local restaurants or company picnics could be planned at an annual or semi-annual basis. These outings provide employees a way to mingle with their co-workers and to get to know their spouses and families, without the stress the workplace sometimes causes. This also shows the families that the link that ties all of them together at the particular event is your company, and gives them a positive view of the company and its workers.
Another contributor to a fun environment is the physical characteristics of the office itself. If the color of the office is dark and dreary, a can of paint could brighten things up a lot. Also, making sure that the employees have comfortable chairs and work areas is very important. A lounge-type area could also have a positive effect. Employees need a place to eat lunch or possibly just hang out on their break time, and keeping this area comfortable and clean will provide to a positive work environment. Another little thing to do would be to purchase some plants to display around the office. The bottom line is that the employees need to feel comfortable at the place where the work, because chances are, they spend just as much if not more time at work as they do in their own homes.
In summary, there are many ways managers can help their employees learn to have fun in their workplace. These ideas do not take a lot of time and have numerous benefits. By providing creative ways for employees to handle stress and other obstacles in the workplace, managers boost morale at the same time. Carrying out these ideas will, in turn, bring employees closer together both in the workplace and out, will help provide a positive working environment, and will bring the manager and the employees to a higher level of success.
