crappy covers

I was watching TV the other day and the clip for 'sunny' by the
Boogiepimps ( ) came on. It drove me absolutely nuts. I know Boney M covered the original (which I havent heard) and it was pretty good (Boney M 's version). These mofos basically ripped Boney M (lyrics, the style of singing and core music), added in some modern generic dancebeat and a whole lot of footage of half naked women in an attempt to flog it off as their own and guess what it works if the song is featured in the top ten (I live in Australia).

Basically im trying to say is that im frustrated with contemporary groups making weak covers of ol school songs. They have not added to it, making it uniquely theirs instead they are just making money off of Boney M by flogging Boney M's song to a new generation of teenage runts that never heard the original. A good cover is say 'knocking on heavens door' by GNR, I can listen to the original by Bob Dylan as well as the GNR version and appreciate them both.

Other crappy covers include 'too close' by BLUE ripping off NEXT and Puffy ripping Sting (not lyrically but musically, given a beat even I can write crappy lyrics) with 'ill be missing you' (swap 'missing' for 'watching' puffy you genious ).

Well im sure many of you can site other examples. Im just checking to see if anyone else gets pissed off at this cheap ripping off.

Yes. I hate it. If you can't improve the song, LEAVE IT ALONE!

Examples in increasing order of shittiness:
311 -> The Cure - Love Song
Orgy -> New Order - Blue Monday
Madonna -> Don McLean - American Pie
Jessica Simpson -> Berlin - Take my breath away

And the champion:
Guns 'N' Roses: Almost any cover not on "Use Your Illusion" but especially "Since I Don't Have You" by The Skyliners.

Matter of fact, LEAVE IT ALONE nomatter what, and go write your own shit. Unless what you are doing will be amazing, and actually different.

The king of bad covers is that All-Star Tribute, where you have Uncle Fester from Staind, Fred Durst, and other money-hungry "stars" butchering a classic Marvin Gaye song out of "compassion." And don't even get me started on the clowns like Nelly and P. Diddy who rapped the singing parts.

The Limp Bizkit (limbizkit, sorry) Behind Blue Eyes and all the novelty punk covers (Ataris, Alien Ant Farm) are all just excuses for people whose own material is dreadful to stay on the radio. Shitty.

But nothing really rivals Avril Lavigne doing System of a Down's Chop Suey.

I didnt know about avril lavigne doing 'chop suey' and jessica simpson doing 'take my breath away'.

uuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhh!! (tortured cry)

Limp biscuit did what could perhapse be the ultimate in bad covers when they covered The Who's "behind bllue eyes". They completely killed the energy of that song, didn't even attempt a decent guitar solo. It's just hard to improve on The Who in the first place, but damn they could have at least tried.

on the otherhand, probably the best cover I've heard in year came from Jhonny Cash, when he covered NIN's "Hurt". Not only was that song so damn right for his life, but I actualy like his version better. Considering how much I like NIN, thats a pretty big task.

jessica simpson's cover of take my breath away was good. johnny cash sucks, and his cover of "hurt" was by far the worst song i've ever heard him do. ever. and that's saying something, because there are no less than three johnny cash albums in the rotation at work.

Wow. I don't think I've ever disagreed with you more thoroughly than I do now.

Jessica Simpson is a good singer, and most of her music is at least passable, but Take My Breath Away was perfect as it was, and her rendition is just terrible.

And as for this: Johnny Cash is THE MAN. He kicks ass.

It wasn't terrible. That's why I say it's among the less shitty of the shitty covers. They did it in the Cure's style, which isn't bad. The crime is that they made it boring. Love Song is a great song, and it's moving and emotional when the Cure sing it. 311 made it vanilla and bland.

do you know anything about that mans life, or how much he has influenced so many genres of music, and so many song writers and banRAB? Hurt goes along so well with that guys life, it's one of the reasons why his cover makes it so good.

Orgy's cover of New Order - Blue Monday
tatu's cover of The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?
Snake River Conspiracy's cover of The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?
Godhead's cover of The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby (but I like it anyway)
Gravity Kills' cover of Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus (I like it anyway too)
Nine Inch Nails' cover of Joy Division - Dead Souls

by the way, what are some of the most common covers? I Fought The Law has been done by a million banRAB, but what else?

Tori Amos' entire album Strange Little Pill. She covers Eminem, Slayer, Depeche Mode, Neil Young and others. It was tough just trying to make it through a whole song.

I didn't care for 311's cover of Love Song either. I agree with Joe on this one.

Some jackass called Maxwell did a cover of This Woman's Work by Kate Bush and absolutely mangled it.

And for a good cover. Ray Charles did a great cover of Eleanor Rigby in 68. I actually like it better than the Beatles version.

I hate covers but the covers i despise the most were when this group the fugees MURDERED no woman no cry, and killing me softly on the same freaking album.
