Cracked Valves? 96 Ford Explorer?

My brother in law has offered me a free car. '96 Ford Explorer with "Two Cracked Valves".

His guy tells him it'd be about $1000 to fix, and it oughtta be done soon.

My question is - does this sound like the correct ballpark figure for something like this? This would be a second car for my wife and I. We don't really need it, although there are times it'd be nice to have. I'm trying to balance the pros/cons of having it.

funny thing is you have no way of knowing if this is all that is wrong with the vehicle !
an old bit of advice. A VEHICLE IS WORTH ONLY AS MUCH AS THE MAINTENANCE THAT WENT INTO IT TO KEEP IT WORKING PROPERLY!
so do you think the vehicle was properly maintained ?
 
Sounds fair especially if they have to pull both heads. A lot of labor involved.
