The funny thing is the couple invited the Police to come in. Serves them right. Morons

good! i hope the target induviduals too why should some ppl get away with stealing when i spend my hard earned money on tv! and prices are going up cuz of pirates

I'm not sure our prices go up because of pirates - more subs just go straight to the bottom line since they are already "competing". Why lower prices based on the number of subs?

I could be very wrong on this, please correct me if I am, but from my understanding BEV has yet to turn a profit.
Therefore there is no bottom line since they're not yet "competing". Satellites are expensive, and I too am compensating the BEV for the pirates.

It's not really money stolen from Bev if they never had that 'customer' in the first place, it's only a POTENTIAL loss of revenue and as such should have NO effect on their need to constantly raise prices.

Since they have twice as many subs as *C, how is it they are loosing money?

Quite simply, too many subs actually cost a pail of money and that is why *C was, is and will continue to turn a profit because they intentionally limit/manage customer growth in a controlled manner and the growth rate, while trailing Bev is just fine and dandy for them.

If the pirates are stealing money from BEV, aren't they also stealing from Rogers, Shaw, Cogeco, Starchoice and all other TV providers, since their TV is 'free' they are less likely to pay ANY provider?

The funny thing is they Steal from BEV, because it's just plain childs play to do so, but end up hurting everybody else and not just Bev.
So Bev in turn feels THOSE subs should be their god given right and in compensation raise the rates for all the legit subs.

I'm pretty sure its been profitable now for a few years. As you noted, it wasn't profitable for quite a few years.

In a nutshell, they are depriving the provider and/or the channels of revenue.

As for why they let the police in, well, many TV piras don't know, or refuse to belive they are pirating or doing anything illegal, and might even believe what they do is just a matter of course, or something right.

While I admit, I haven't investigated the matter recently, do you have any references we could refer to?
Just how did you come to that conclusion?

Perhaps a respected person I know has been feeding me bogus information.

I saw this item last night on CTV nightly news...it was all Bell/Dishnet gear, plus bags full of Dish/Bell Xvu cards, instructions for converting receivers between providers, etc., etc. Not exactly a hobbyist, looked more like an unauthorized home business to me...... :D

Can't believe these two dummies invited the cops into their house with all that damning evidence lying around.....

"Hey, officer...if you like those access cards and all the satellite stuff, just wait'll you get a load of what we have growin' in the basement!!"

Oops.....

:o

i heard that the guy was having a heart attack, so emergency services was called (911)
they noticed the illegal stuff all over, and the police then got a search warrant
i didnt feel bad for the guy, till i heard he had them there for a heart attack
if his heart was in bad shape before, these charges should do some damage

yea, that is kinda lame. I suppose if they find a guy having a coronary and some weed falls out of his pocket, they call up their buds at the cop shop and turn him in......

Just for laughs.. Let say I have a satellite receiver and dish, I use it to receive all the over-the-air channels, which are "must carrys" by the BDUs. Am I pirating??

I would say yes, because you are decrypting a signal without authorization, i.e. payment. That is, you can pick up GOLTV, that's about it. Descrambling anything that's scrambled by the carrier is a no-no....even stuff you could pick up with an antenna. Reception is not the issue, it's unauthorized decryption of a scrambled signal....

That's my totally useless legal opinion.....worth about $0.02, but yours for free....

;)
