Country setting on T3

I hope somebody can help with the following problem.

I bought a T3 in the UK and used it there for a while. I have moved back to South Africa but am unable to change the country setting to SA as it is not one of the countries listed - the problem results in excel not being able to show Rands and I cannot connect to the cell phone network (for GPRS) as the country listing is not there.

I received the following message from Palm (after the third attempt). By the way they got my name wrong as well! (it is Rory).

"Dear nancy,

Thank you for contacting palmOne? Technical Support. My name is Smita and I will be assisting you with the option to select the country & currency.

I am sorry to inform you that the handheld purchased at UK will have the features built in to use at UK. In order to get the settings to select the country & the currency you will have to purchase the handheld built to use at Africa. "

Speaking to Palm in SA - the T3 arrives here with a different SKU.

I guess it's to do with the type of ROM. Here in England the ROM is EFIGS (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish) and in the US they have a US ROM. I guess in Africa, there must be another ROM which supports your country's currency etc.
I suggest contacting Dataviz with your Documents To Go problem. Even if it's not in the ROM, it's quite possible they could add your currency to an update in their software.
I'm not sure where you need to enter the country for a phone connection though- where is this option?

Thanks for the further information, it is a pity that they have done this with the T3, my Palm V never had this kind of problem. Probably going to cut my losses and buy a Windows CE machine - pointless having 2 T3's when I travel (one for Africa and one for Europe - if I go to the states will need another one !).

It does seem strange. You can adjust the time worldwide of course, it's just the currency. I guess they expect all people will either work in one currency or another..
If it's just a currency converter you need, WorldMate is very good for that.
Sorry I can't be of more help

Goeie more van Hong Kong.

What an inane reply from palmOne. "I'm here to help you: I can't help you. "

Apart from the currency issue - which iiicRules has addressed - not sure of the purpose for which you need a country setting. I have a T3 which works perfectly in Asia, South Africa, Europe, Australia, etc. Even the Middle East. What are you trying to do that requires the setting?

Hello Ryetee

Thanks for the response. Yes the currency issue in excel is not such a big deal, maybe one of the other curencies uses an R like our rands.

The bigger problem is that I cannot connect onto GPRS through my Nokia 3650 due to this coubtry setting - the T3 does not allow you to put in your network settings (theGPRS works fine on the 3650).

It seems like an incredibly stupid idea not to have an option to setup the connection yourself - it is a very simple task. So the upshot of this is that I can't use the web or email functionalityof the T3 - I can pickup mail from my laptop but the point is I want to carry the T3 with me when I travel and not the laptop!

Palm does not seem to want to keep customers! I have had a Palm V that was fine, but if I can't sort this problem out then do you think I would ever buy another Palm product again?

Hmm. I'm not so sure that the country setting really matters, all it really serves to do, is provide you with approprate network operator options. Have you actually just tried selecting another country and operator- preferably another country which has the operator you use in Africa?
Just a thought.....
I guess each little driver has the GPRS settings for each country/network. You'd of thought it would be fairly simple to provide support for Africa too. I have to say though, I think if you had an African Palm, it still wouldn't have the drivers. I checked out PalmOnes African support section, and got the phone drivers- but they are all the same unfortunately. Still no Africa.

I'm with iiiRules on this. If you are using Versamail and/or WebPro (and despite the citicism one often sees of them, they work perfectly well) or, I imagine, any other similar program, there is simply a Bluetooth or IR link between your T3 and your cellphone. Provided that your cellphone connects to your ISP, you're up and running.

Although I use a local ISP in HK, I also have an account with ATT Global: when I travel I use ATT's dialler to dial into a local node with my cellphone which then establishes the connection with the T3. No adjustment need be made to any setting on the T3 - other, of course, than the locality of the node I want to dial into, which is chosen within ATT's dialler program.

Hope this is of some help.

I just got lost in thought. It was unfamiliar territory.

Hello All

Thanks for the feedback, yes when selecting e.g. UK it brings up the network operators available in that area.

Will try tackling the problem from another perspective as suggested.

Will let you know how I get on.

Regards,

Rory
