Country area in Texas to purchase my first home?

I currently rent a duplex in Round Rock, Texas and am looking to move into my first home! But... eh... I need a little help. I've never lived in a house before, even while growing up, and I have no idea what I'm doing as far as not being scammed by a crazy interest rate, etc. What do I need to check into to really be smart about this and not regret things later on? ALSO... I want to move within a 30 minute drive from Round Rock since my hubby and I still work there. But, neither one of us are into the city scene. Where's the best place "country-wise" to move that won't put us in debt? I have $30,000 going down and want all of this to be as affordable as possible with the economy and us trying to have kids in the next year. HELP!!!
