Counting between seeing lightning and hearing thunder; a good indication of how close

the storm is? I have always heard this in several TV shows and the movies, and I am not really sure if it is true. Like once see the lightning strike, you begin to count one...two..three.. then whenever you hear the thunder that indicates how far/close the storm is from your very location? So the closer the lightning/thunder sight sound is together, then that would mean the storm is close.


Is this all true?
