I am very worried about my 3 year old. About a week ago she had a horrible night terror and woke up screaming. It took about 10 to 15 minutes for her to come out of it and then just when I thought she was ok, she looked at me with terror in her eyes and started to scream like I had just turned into the boggy man and she didn't recognize me. That started another bout that last about 10 minutes of her shaking, crying and screaming. The worse part is, that she is still seeing things and is contantly terrified. She still looks at me like she doesn't recognize me sometimes and acts frightened of me? There has been a lot going on in our lives and she has gone through many changes. Her father and I split up and we moved for six months back to my home town and then I moved into my brother's apt. She was fine here the first 2 weeks and acting like her normal, well adjusted self but since the dream that is all she talks about and how scared she is off this house. I know that no one has hurt her and that she has always been safe, I have never left her alone with anyone. She does have asthma and when she had that dream she woke up with a fever, I took her to the hospital the next day because her fever would not break and they said she had a viral infection. She had finished a course of prednisone two days prior and was 9 days into a ten day course of antibiotics for a throat infection. She has severe allergies and takes Zyrtec every night. At first I atributed the dream and hallucinations to the fever, then the Dr.'s told me prednisone could do it too, but she no longer has the fever and she has been off the prednisone for over a week and she is still seeing things and acting terrified. I am beside myself with worry. The only constant is the Zyrtec and I am wondering if it is causing these symptoms. If anyone has any advice, answers or similar experiences please let me know. I need to try to help my baby through this and I just don't know what to do. I am very worried. Thank you.
Thanks for all the response. I plan on calling the Dr. monday morning, since it's a weekend and the thought just occurred to me I was hoping someone might have some immediate insight. I researched Zyrtec on-line and I did not see night terrors or hallucinating. The sites said that not all side effect were listed so I thought maybe it could be rare one. It did say restlessness, trouble sleeping and tremors could occur and she has had all of those. I know night terrors in themselves are common in children, my brother used to have them, but he never remembered them and the fear didn't last for days and he didn't talk about them all the time and still see things from his dream days after. She won't give me any details about her dream, she just said "mama, I had a bad dream" over and over again and wants to be held all the time. She is constantly terrified. She's still hallucinating and my mind is going in circles, is it schizophrenia, a drug reaction or something even spiritual.
