In the short story “Mirror Image”, by Lena Coackley, Alice changes into a person in which we never could have possibly imagined her to become. Alice avoids mirrors at all costs as her fear of them makes it hard for her to live her daily life “normally”.
Some of the first indications of Alice and her new body are the change in her hair color. While she was once a flaming ginger, she now has more of a strawberry blonde tinge tone. “Alice walked across the bedroom like a fashion model, wearing nothing but black bikini underwear.” later, “Actually, as bodies go, this one is a lot better. I mean, check it out! No cellulite.” This shows a reference to how her body has changed. I’d say, at least in her eyes, for the better. Another quote: “No one has ever told me that this body is ugly. For all I know, its never had zits. I haven’t had one yet. I feel like I could do anything in this body. Hey, did I show you? I can almost touch my foot to the back of my head.” This not only determines that she must have used to have had acne, but also that she likes her new self. As a side note- I feel awful for her twin sister, I mean, she is totally rubbing this in her face.
On the topic of her twin, she is insecure and slightly jealous. We can see examples of this because she is cynical and a tad bit glum. I can understand how Jenny must feel though, when there is always someone better and greater than her. Also, this is her very closest friend, her shared DNA, and she has become a whole new person. You can feel that their differences have caused them to slide apart, divide in a way. “Let me read your diary.” - “not now” where as before the accident they would read each others diaries every single day. They basically shared thoughts. “I know what your diary says-ooh, I found a new mole today on my new body. Ooh, don’t my new armpits smell divine?” Her twin showed some issues of feeling insufficient and possibly also worthlessness.
Alice underwent many emotional and mental changes as was a part of her full body transplant.. “Alice had to re-learn how to move in the hospital, and to speak. At first the world was nothing but a mush of dark images, disconnected voices and prickly feelings all over her skin.” In my understanding Alice basically started all over from ground zero, with the mental capacity of an infant. Quickly though, her mind scrambled back into order, to my amazement. But the brain is a very adaptable tool. Her emotions must have been at full throttle because of all the new parts and things rushing through her mind. Also, her physical body was tingly, sore and she was unfamiliar with it. This may have effected her in the ways that she can relate to normal people with feelings of supremacy. Even question. “these weren’t her hands. This wasn’t her breath. Definitely as a doctor I would advise her to see a therapist or counselor.
All in all, we discovered a little bit about Alice and how she changed, her twin, and how the emotional and mental trauma may have been difficult for this teenaged girl.
