Could the Honda VTX 1300 T (Tourer) be a good choice for a novice cyclist?

Hi,

I will soon purchase my first motorcycle, and have no riding experience.

I've been doing a considerable amount of research, and also visiting dealers and soliciting opinions from some friends who are experienced riders.

Currently, my choice is the Honda VTX1300 T (Tourer), which is a decent-sized cruiser. Of course, I chose that model based on the type of riding I will do (around town, long commutes on highways, and long tours). I sat on several bikes, and the VTX 1300T felt just right, even "great" compared to, say, the Harley Sportster. It also comes with saddlebags and a windscreen.

However, one friend said outright that the VTX 1300T is a poor choice for a novice rider. She thought it would be "too much bike" for me. I understand that a lighter bike might be easier to ride. On the other hand, I always approach the learning of new skills carefully, with safety in mind. I would read everything I can, certainly take the safety course, and practice diligently. My immediate goal would not be to fly fast around town, but instead learn to ride, turn, stop, and start confidently and methodically until my skills in those areas become automatic.

So . . . my question is this: Do you really think I'm biting off more than I can chew by choosing the Honda VTX1300 T as my first bike? Or if I approach the bike with respect and learn to ride it carefully, as described above, do you think the bike would work well for me?

Thanks,
David

The VTX 1300 is a great touring bike. It is an insane choice for a first bike unless of course you are 6'-12" tall and weigh 300lbs then yes it will be quite manageable. Do yourself a favor and find a smaller standard type bike to get at least one season under your belt before buying the road going queen mary you want. your female friend is wise. Listen to her instead. 1300cc first bike, sheesh
