The Bell, or in german, "Die Glocke" was a supposed Nazi super weapon that many have concluded may have been a type of time travel device. It was known to contain a mysterious purple substance known as Xerum 525. The device contained two counter rotating drums that housed this liquid and a type of vent at the bottom. All of this information and more can be found on wikipedia or any other number of websites by googling or using yahoo search. What i have never found is any speculation that the bell may have been an early nazi attempt at an atom bomb. What follows is nothing more than speculation on the subject and any feedback or alternative opinions would be appreciated.
The bell was known to contain Xerum 525. It so happens that an element exists on the periodic table with the abbreviation Xe, this element being Xenon. Xenon, however, unlike Xerum is a noble gas and completely inert, quite the opposite radioactive. However, it is possible that Xerum was simply an isotope of Xenon, the purple color nothing more than a side effect. For more information on Xenon simply consult a periodic table. This is assuming the same abbreviations were used, as it is a 'secret' weapon, it is just as likely 'Xerum' was simply a codename for enriched uranium.
As for the counter rotating drums, they could have been an attempt at atom smashing not unlike the technology used today in the large hadron collider (LHC). Once again, for more information on the technology behind the LHC, simply use a search engine or wikipedia. The LHC accelerates atoms until the violently collide at high speeds. Since German Scientists at the time would not have had access to the discoveries being made through the manhattan project it is possible (once again, speculation) that they believed nuclear fission could be achieved by smashing atoms together. What better way to do this then spin barrels of them at insane speeds in opposite directions? Would the barrels join once the speed was high enough to allow a collision of particles? Could a nuclear explosion be achieved without the need for the liquid in the opposing barrels to ever actually meet? Could anything else in this machine account for nuclear fission, or even more ambitious, fusion?
