Could sports be a means to combat devolution?

First, let's assume that as a species, over thousands of years we have become smarter, but physically weaker as well. This would be due to adaptation and pampering through domestication - no longer having to hunt for our food, build our own huts (we tools to do that now), and no longer having to travel on foot (due to cars), etc. You get the point. As technology has advanced, brains have slowly risen in significance and brawn has come to matter less, so let's assume we're smarter, yet weaker.

Assuming this is true, would you agree that sports, weightlifting, etc., could be a way to slow down our devolution into a physically inferior species?
