...inheriting money from family? I need help in learning about banking investments..My mother died suddenly--then my dad commited suicide--I am the only child its not millions, but enough. I am POD on the chk acct, and they need both death cert. I have one-my dads will take 6-8 wks because its at medical examiners office. The lady at bank said they would honor chks, as long as the $ is in the acct-NOW they arent doin that. I found several signed blank chks n the safety deposit box..They say the sig is way off well DUHH he was out of his mind. So here are the main questions......
1. Should I move the cash once death cert is recvd from current bank?
2. Theres a CD, with a nice amt- I want to put this amt in another plan or similar one. Whats safest & why? Do I owe taxes on the CD my parents had? What would be a wise way to reinvest these funds & why?
3. I was the heir on the house deed-which is free & clear..I have multiple student loans some that have defaulted. Should I leave this in my name or put in someone elses name.
4. What are my tax responsibilities?
5. I am livid about the way the supervising bank teller talked to me, after the personal banker told me different-I am going to complain-whats the most effective way todo this?
I have an appt with a lawyer, and a financial advisor. I would like some feedback.. I realize this is alot-BUT if you have any advise on any of the above or just one question, I would greatly appreciate it. If you do this for a daily job is there anything Im missing.-I know about paying yrly taxes, and homeowners. But i want to make logical, sound decisions, and now I feel since my parents are gone-I MUST DO ALL THE RIGHT THINGS FOR MY OWN child
