The essay topic is: It is hard to find a single redeeming feature in Macbeth yet the reader is expected to empathise with him.
Even if you know nothing about Macbeth it would be great if you could still put your input in. Any critisism or help is greatly appreciated
Could you please tell me if something doesn't make sense or if I'm contradicting myself or anything like that. Thanks in advance.
Also I am having trouble writing the final sentences for the conclusion so any ideas please would be great.
Macbeth does not possess a great deal of redeeming qualities in the play Macbeth. Macbeth is a complex character that features both positive and negative qualities. He can be seen as both the villain and the hero all at the same time and although he is definitely more the villain than the hero, it is hard not to feel empathetic towards him as he goes through the emotions of profound guilt.
This is because everyone can relate to Macbeths situation of letting greed vanquish themselves over a matter that they have become so passionate about. Macbeth is first introduced as a brave, noble, loyal and honourable hero, but after hearing the three witches prophecies and undergoing the pressure from his wife Lady Macbeth to become the superior of his country, he is a changed man. His ambition brings out the worst of him and he is no longer trustworthy and honourable, but evil. Evil had possessed him and could not be recognized as the same man as at the start, and he now had no favourable qualities.
Loyalty, bravery and nobility were the positive qualities that initially made the man of Macbeth. He fought for his country and his bravery and courage earnt him the title of Thane of Cawdor. King Duncan expressed his affections for his noble warrior as “A gentleman on whom I built an absolute trust”. Lady Macbeths comment that her husband is “too full o’ th’ milk of human kin
kindness” to fulfil such a thing as the witches prognostication supports the honourable reputation Macbeth had attained. Macbeth was originally a decent, honourable and well respected member of the community.
The pressure and expectation from Lady Macbeth as well as the strong desire to gain all power and control progressively forces out the worst in Macbeth. Lady Macbeth urges Macbeth to murder King Duncan in order to become King because she desires to gain Kingship through Macbeth, to make herself the most powerful woman in all of Scotland. The pair shares an immensely strong bond together and Lady Macbeth uses this to her advantage. She uses words to manipulate him by saying he would “be more than what you were; you would be so much more the man” if he were to carry out the treacherous deed of murdering the King. She lowers his feeling of self worth and exploits his loyalty towards her and the fragile state of mind he is presently in. Lady Macbeth was very much responsible
for the miscreant qualities that began to feature in Macbeth. The witches’ prophecy is too alluring to resist for Macbeth. Their prophecies act as a vehicle to ensconce ambition in him. This leads for Macbeth to become greedy with his unprecedented happiness, be untruthful to those whom he trusted and had trust in him and ultimately to numerous murders. If it were not for Lady Macbeth and the witches, he would have remained the valiant warrior he once was, rather than the fiend that had begun to reside in Macbeth.
Macbeth is possessed by evil after the horrific acts have been carried out, and only the traits of greed, unpleasantness, selfishness and ambition can be recognised in him. He reacts in a vulgar manner and shows contempt to those inferior to him, even referring to a messenger as “whey-face”. He becomes completely self-absorbed that when the death of his wife occurs, to him it is still real but he lacks emotions and is senseless. His reaction almo
unmans him and hardly any grief is felt by Macbeth after the murders of Banquo and Macduffs family. Macbeth now so passionately wanted to reach superiority in his country that he was willing to care and think of only himself. He no longer even cared about the welfare of the country he once fought to defend, but the status of which he hoped to achieve. With the most influential source of persuasion being Lady Macbeth now gone, only Macbeth could be blamed for his actions, and he could no longer be considered at all noble, trustworthy or loyal but selfish, greedy and over-ambitious.
Macbeth’s downfall from a noble and loyal warrior to villainy makes it hard to feel one sided about this complex character. Heavy influence overpowered the once decent Macbeth and turns him into someone he never intended to be. For the audience it becomes difficult to identify any remaining positive features of Macbeth, but still he is relatable as the distinctively human evil and good qualities co
coexist.
Sorry, I know it is really long. But it has to be haha.
