could someone assist me in trying to break through the b.s. about backpacking?

for some time, i have been going through all the answers and all the web sights (ones i could do that is) about gear and what to take for an off the trail, extremely long hike through the bush. now all the civilian backpackers all seem to want to take allot of stuff that seems to be a wast that you would not use or they say might be useful just in case. i have looked over as much about the military rucksacks and gear but allot of people say military gear is heavy and a wast and that civilian gear is better. now i do not mind using army gear even if it is on the heavy side because i feel its more durable than the civilian stuff and i would get a work out; also i would not mind wearing the old canadian combat uniform. has anyone have any suggestions or comments. also if there is a military backpacker who is willing to give up a list of what to take, and what should be dropped off at resupply points and any other information i would like to hear from you
oh and by the way, i was thinking about using the old canadian p82 rucksack and p82 web gear
