Could it be gerd?

I have been reading all the posts about magnesium helping reflux sufferers and have found it very interesting. My 19 year old son has most of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency - insomnia, fatigue, migraines, digestion problems, anxiety, asthma.

He will involuntarily vomit the entire continent of his meal. This may happen immediately after eating or up to 2 hours after eating. This doesn't happen after every meal, but several times a week. He doesn't have any pain under his rib cage, but does have burning in his stomach for 10 - 15 min. after vomiting. Sometimes, if he is upset and nervous he will involuntarily vomit stomach acid between meals.

The doctors say it is nerves and have placed him on reglan. He has been on it for about 10 days and so far i haven't seen any improvement. All tests results have came back normal.

Does this sound like gerd? Do you think magnisium and digestive enzymes would help him? Do you have any other suggestions?
He is really suffering and i need to find a way to help him.

Hi there
GERD can present in many ways! Some people get the chest symptoms while others have silent GERD and end up with throat irritation or coughing. I would ask your doctor to investigate this possibility, or, try some OTC meRAB in the meantime (if you haven't already!). Sometimes dr.s figure our problems this way anyhow--put you on a med (like they are doing with the anxiety drug) and if your symptoms subside, then they assume that that is the issue.

It sure sounRAB like it to me. Before I found out I had GERD I would eat and no matter HOW MUCH I ate it would all come back up either 5 minutes after eating or even up to a couple of hours after eating.

It's not like a vomiting type of throw-up where your stomach is heavving but instead like a feeling that you're about to burp but instead it's the food that just comes up into your mouth. You can either A0 try to re-swallow it or B) make your way to the toilet and basically empty your entire stomach contents.

Even wiht all the medicine that I take it still happens daily. I'm not in as much pain in mystomach while laying down but it still happens. I also found out I have a hiatal hernia. don't know if this is causing me to throw up my food but I've lost about 40lbs since this started. And I'm totally sick and tire of being sick and tired.

But I would have to say YES your son does have GERD and neeRAB to be on the right medicine.

Good luck

If your throwing up daily ,have you ever had an endoscopy done?Seems to me if you throwup daily, if you have the right insurance you might be a canidate for surgery. If not i would suggest you have an endoscopy done.I have an uncle who was on Nexium for years who still delevoped Barretts Esophagus.Which made his throat bleed from broken mini like blood vessesls or capallaries ( not sure of the spelling)in the throat. The doctors think he might have cancer of the liver, but they cant put a tube down into his throat to look because he bleeRAB too much.Dont mean to scare you,i was just concerned when you said you throwup daily.Take care.

you knowI did have an endoscopy done. And much like you've just suggested he told me that I would have to have this done at least every year because the irratation that is being done in my throat and just outside my stomach where my hyatial hernia is can cause cancer because of the irritation. it did scare me a little bit as I can't do anything about it.

but I think my throwing up daily won't end unless I have surgery for my hyaital hernia and the doc even said that it's not even a 90% success rate so that worries me a lot too.

Plus I don't want to make the matter go from bad to worse as they cut 3 holes in your chest to do the surgery.

I guess I'll just live with it for the time being and try to deal with it the best way I can. But it's totally not fun. as everytime I eat 5 minutes later it comes back up in my mouth. Most of the time I just try to reswollow it back down but if it's a lot I have to run to the bathroom and throw it all up. when I do that everything in my stomach empties out.

And if I'm out at a nice restaurant that is a big pain in the ass and it's even screwed up my plans that I had because I had to go back home for the night as I was so sick on my stomach.

thanks for the reply and advice by the way.
