Could Canada afford all that government health care if US wasn't Canada's military?

or could they afford the prescriptions if the usa didnt absorb the bulk of the r&d cost of new medications. prescriptions are much more expensive in the usa ( and cheaper in canada and even moreso in mexico ) partly because the usa pays higher prices for them.

If it were evened out and all countries paid the same, i would bet some of these universal systems would go broke quick.

"SocialD.... Canadians have to pay more in taxes for perscriptions... soo actually we end up paying around the same or even more (depending on your health) on healthcare for you AND for the rest of the country... "

those taxes must be alot then. when i checked on a prescription i used to need, it was 135usd in the usa and 68usd if i bought it in canada and 56usd if i bought it in mexico. that was for a 1mo supply you can do the math on how much cheaper that ( basically 50% cheaper if i could buy it in canada ) i cant imagine if you went and bought that prescription it would cost 68 dollars and another 67 dollars in tax in canada.

Canadian troops are dying in Afghanistan just like our boys.
And considering they are officially "Her Majesty's Forces" I would say the UK is Canada's Military if I couldn't admit that they had their own.
But really great question. I see someone inexplicably starred it as interesting.

That has been very true in the past because we have had too many Liberal governments.

Like liberals in the US, the Liberal party in Canada doesn't believe in spending money on the military.

On the other hand, the last Liberal government also decimated our social programs.

You are aware that Canada spend more money on military-related costs then Israel, right?
I also find it a bit depressing that America spends over twice as much as the whole European Union.

We have a canadian army. What you said is pretty ignorant considering we are in Afghanistan doing our share in that war. We do not need a big military like yours because we mind our business and NOBODY wants to attack us.

You and I probably agree on the lion's share of issues, but this question is unfair and unwarranted.

Canadian Forces is pretty much exactly the size one would expect the defense force of a nation of 33 million to be.

Canadian Forces troops are fighting and dying alongside US troops in Afghanistan as we speak. They have lost 127 troops since their mission began in 2002. On a per capita basis, that's more than we have lost.

I live near the border and have many Canadian friends. I follow Canadian politics closely and have a great admiration and respect for them and their country. That being said, they're not perfect, but Canadian Forces is pretty much the LAST thing about Canada which deserves to be attacked.

The only way Canada's health care system works is by rationing.

They put people who need critical care on long waiting lists.

America's health care might be expensive, but it's the best in the world.

SocialD.... Canadians have to pay more in taxes for perscriptions... soo actually we end up paying around the same or even more (depending on your health) on healthcare for you AND for the rest of the country...

Sure, it may seem cheaper when you're buying drugs from the counter, but you're paying alot mre in taxes

Military for what? Canada doesn't need to invade countries that weren't involved in 9/11, even if they had been attacked on 9/11. Moron!

Canada's military budget for 2008 was $18.2 billion.

There's also $15 billion in spending on military vehicles, including transport planes, heavy-lift helicopters, troop carrier ships and trucks. The spending will be spread out over several years.

They have 62,000 military personnel including 9,000 sailors, 19,500 soldiers, 12,500 air force personnel and 20,000 administrative and support personnel. There are also about 25,000 reservists.

I think they can take care of themselves.
