Could Baseball greats of yesteryear be compared to players today?

We all know Babe Ruth was one of the greatest baseball players of all time. But not too many of us have personally witnessed his greatness. I always wondered if Babe Ruth saw pitches that were 90 + MPH, Or pitches that had a lot of movement on them like the pitchers do today, he would not perform as well

Because if the pitchers back in the day were only pitching 50-60mph (not sure how fast they pitched, this is just a guess) and throwing cookie cutters down the middle, his accomplishments can't be compared to those today. Now I realize many of todays superstars records have been tainted because of steroid use. Arod, Bonds, and Sosa all took performing enhancing drugs. But, I can't help but wonder, if Babe Ruth played in todays league would he be the same dominant hitter? Or has pitching evolved so much (speed increase, increase in movement, breaking balls etc) That Babe wouldn't be able to perform at the same level?

Do you think its possible that because pitching speed has (possibly) increased significantly (as well as movement) that performing enhancing drugs helped even the playing field. Maybe if Arod had a time machine and played in the same era as Babe Ruth, he would hit 1000 home runs.

I just get the feeling that the pitchers weren't as good back in the day, as they are now (probably the 1960's to present the pitchers have gotten a lot stronger and better)
