Hi! I'm teaching myself about the history, music theory, etc. about Indian Classical Music. Aside from my interests like I'm planning to take Tabla lessons I'm thinking of starting a club in an After School Prog ("Arts-in-Ed.") teaching about Indian Classical Music as well as demonstrating my Tabla playing. I have a book by a Dir. from an Indian Ctnr., but he's VERY Spiritual (I'm not Criticizing Spirituality). His book covers the History/Origin, Instruments, Indian Music Theory (Ragas & Talas) etc., but he doesn't cover How Indian Classical Music is used TODAY (He states that "Music is not a product, but it is divine" & that "Raga is the color of the mind".).
When I went to Barnes-n-Noble last week looking All Over Both in the stores AND Online I was out of luck. I'm so frustrated. Most of the books that I find are either the Traditional (like the Director's book) OR interviews w/ famous Composers like Ravi Shankar or how George Harrison used the Sitar while he was in the Beatles.
So, could anyone suggest what books are out there that would discuss:
1) How Indian Classical has grown today combined w/ Western Music
2) How Today's Indian Classical Music is used for TV, Film, etc.
However, someone suggested that I look into "Bollywood", BUT when I did (look @ Bollywood Books) these books Only Covered Indian FILM & NOT their music used for Western TV, Film, etc. So, I REALLY Want to know b/c I've been to an Indian Fusion Concert AND I have a CD from the "Toronto Tabla Ensemble" which is also Indian Fusion as well & I am passionate about sharing how Indian Classical Music is used now. Also being a musician, I'm planning to take Tabla lessons so I could song write & play it w/ Rock music (kinda like George H., but using Tabla instead of Sitar).
So, could someone help me out?? I really want to continue educating myself so I can Teach an "Classical Indian Music Appreciation" class.
I'll take Any Info. or suggestions that you have. It will be most appreciative.
Thanks!
Mona
