Could a person be the killer even though their DNA doesn't match that on a stamp?

So the main zodiac killer suspect was said to be excluded because his DNA did not match that of the DNA on a stamp from a letter the killer mailed. Couldn't he have had an accomplice that licked the stamp for him? They say that was before the general public knew about DNA, but since the killer was very intelligent couldn't he have known to take precautions? Like it's generally not good to put your prints/bodily fluids on something. Also a print on the letter was not his. Again, couldn't he have had another person that also touched the letter?

It's sort of like how today's criminals would handle a letter with rubber gloves, not knowing what the future technology would be but anticipatng that there will be more high-tech DNA testing or other ways of tracing a person in the future.
