Could a car have a blown head gasket and not overheat?

My gf has a 1999 Mitsubishi Galant, 2.4L automatic. She bought the car as-is, needing work. When I decided to change the oil, I noticed that it was milky. Assuming the head gasket was blown, I let the car run for a long time to see if would start to overheat. The temp gauge stayed steadily in the middle the whole time, even when I drove the car around and revved up the engine. There was no loss of power with acceleration. There is no smoke whatsoever from the tailpipe, except for very little on cold start (normal). Any ideas?
