cost of building a dh/fr bike?

i wanna build a transition dirtbag.
minus the cost of the frame and rear shock what is an estimate price for the parts needed and what are good parts to buy for this bike?
 
I don't really know. The new SLX group from shimano is nice and cheap, the cranks are real light and stronger that XT. Use a 2 ring plus bashguard crankset, SLX front deraileur, X.7 shifters and rear deraileur, if you like SRAM, or go SLX all the way if you prefer Shimano.

Brakes, use Avid Code or Elixir Rs, pretty good and not that expensive. I guess they should be around 130-150 each (depending on rotor size). I have Magura Louise BAT and they work pretty good as well. Shimano XT have received good opinion (I had previous XT model and they were good). Maybe the SLX are almost as good but not as blingy and maybe something less, but I'm betting they're pretty good for a budget.

Forks, probably the Rock Shox Domain is a solid fork, not as nice as the Lyric or Totem, but costs about half of them. 400 bucks and up. I think that the 2009 Marzocchis 55 have worked fine, but actually I haven't heard any bad about them (2008 were not that good quality wise, but 2009 I think they are fine). Fox 36 Van R is also a good option, pretty strong.

Wheelset, well, I guess you could look at around 400 bucks upwards.

You still need a saddle (from 50 to 100), grips (10 to 20 bucks), stem, handlebar, seatpost.

If you're buying new, you could consider Transition prices for forks and component Kit, that could be a good option.
 
That DB bike rates a good component group but you dont have to have one. I wouldnt go lower than Sram X7 or 9 on this one and Shimano XT at the lowest but these are going to cost you dearly for the component group. X7= $700 approx. X9= $850 approx. XT= $900 approx. and XTR=$ 1800 approx. of course this will depend on where you buy from. Any online retailer will be your best bet for savings on the group and buy last years models if they have them. Saint by Shimano makes a good group too for DH bikes but again $1500.... or you could go with the SLX group, about $800 Oh yeah the fork....$500 +???? Much cheaper to buy the bike as a whole unit unless you have deep pockets and just want to pay 3x as much as you need to. Ebay what you have now and buy the bike already assembled with the XT or X9 group on it!
 
upwards of 3000 dollars. Don't go for anything but real hydraulic disk brakes, preferably with more than two pistons, still... the guys racing for yeti cycles (HUGE DH team) are on two piston disks by shimano. a good fork by rockshox are good too, like a pike or boxxxer. then you go to wheels, which you can get sufficent wheels for about 400 dollar. then give it a deore slx gruppo if you are doing lighter runs, but for the real heavy $hit, you need shimano saint. whatever you do, dont go to a junk yard, you wont find anything but fatigued and rusted crap there. you could probably find the parts on craigslist for a bit cheaper, but... still.... a decent DH bike costs cash. (and whatever you do, dont put the headset spacers below the headset to raise the frame)
