Copyrights on photos.?

I have a very old photograph/portrait of a woman that was taken in 1972, in black and white that was take somewhere in India/Pakistan. It is in need of restoring by a professional. I would like to do this but want to make sure I'm not breaking any laws about copyrights to the photo. Are there copyrights to this photo taken 37 years ago in a third world country? Could there be a problem if I were to scan the photo and have a third party digitally restore the image.
There are no markings of who took the photo... etc.
 
Research the photographer, if possible.
If the pic has been published, good chance of a copyright.
If you are use this photo for yourself only and plan to make no profit from it, you are most likely okay.
