Cool fish for a 10-gallon tank?

My 12-year-old brother recently got a 10-gallon fishtank as present, but has become depressed after finding out that it was too small for any of the "cool" fish (eels, dragonfish, etc.)
Do you have any suggestions for what he might like, that would be suitable for this size tank?

For a first tank it is best to start with sturdy fish like tetras and danios. Zebra danios will zigzag alot in the tank and are fun to watch. Getting a shoal of neon tetras is good too they are fun to watch. Tetras come in all shapes, colors and sizes, they are generally a docile species. There are also some cool catfish out there that roam the bottom. I have a killi fish that is bright and cool looking too. just be sure to keep track of how big they are going to get for the tank size. I hope he enjoys his new tank!
 
while you can cheer him up some he could have a cool fish provided he prepared and planed for a larger tank in the future

a lot really depends on what he calls a cool fish the ones most of the people have suggested I personally would not call a cool fish and it is true that most of the more interesting fish really need tanks bigger than a 10 gallon if he would be inters ted in something like a betta he could put in a couple of tank dividers and have 2 or 3 male Betta's living side by side and not able to harm each other
 
kuhli (coolie) loaches are eel like fish that would be suitable

try a siamese fighting fish (betta) with 3-6 kuhli loaches
or
a few guppies or platies with 3-6 kuhli loaches

sand substreate is best for kuhli loaches as they like to dig but gravel is ok (provide caves)
 
Guppies are really fun. I would suggest getting 1 male and 2 or 3 females in colors he likes. They they can breed and he can wonder about what color the babies will be. Ghost or cherry shrimp and african frogs are fun too. If you get a ghost shrimp and the guppies, the shrimp will keep the number of babies to a minimum, so you don't get a ton of them.

I would say that a 10 gal. tank could hold about 6 guppies before you want to give some to the local pet shop. Also, they are live bearers, so you don't have to worry about eggs not hatching and rotting.

Just provide a place for the babies to hide from the parents and shrimp.
 
we just got a 10 gallon tank too.Platys are cool and balloon bellies a Very pretty and have lots of personality. But make sure you don't get a male and female platy because ours a having babies and all the other fish are eating them but the balloon Belle is not .
