Convincing Argument for Toyota PRIUS at 16?

I know that I should be lucky to have my parents even consider helping me buy a car at 16, but I really think the Prius is worth it (& I'm a safe driver!)

The car they already have and wanted to give me is a 1993 Toyota 4Runner, which they are obsessed with and think it is such a great car, but 15 years is a pretty long time. I just think with rising gas prices, I don't need to drive such a HUGE SUV for just one person!


I am 100% willing to get a job and slowly pay them back, and I am 100% NOT expecting a new Prius, I have been looking at used ones from 2004-present.


How can I make them see that it is really worth the money?
 
This kind of stuff gets asked a lot. What you are forgetting is that your teenage brain is not at all capable of making that evaluation ("worth the money") You'll never convince them using logic, because honestly, you don't use it. Your teenage brain can't process it. Your parents will not be fooled.

Take the free car, get a job, save your money. Tell your parents (no whining) that due to your committment to do something about global warming, you'd prefer to drive a prius. No whining. Whatever they say, just say "okay, I just wanted you to know how I feel". No whining.

When you talk to other people like an adult, they'll treat you like one. That doesn't mean they'll buy a free car, but it's a start.
 
The only issue with the Prius and other hybrid cars is that you need to replace the batteries every 5 years or so. That will usually cost between $1500 - $3000. That is the only real issue I see with them. At this point it would be more cost effective to get a regular car that gets a little less gas mileage. Do your research online first. Check out the 5 year cost of owning one compared to say a corolla. Just look them up on Yahoo Autos.
