Convert over to a LifeDrive

O.K. - So my T3 is trashed and I'm going to go get a LifeDrive today. I'm starting fresh (and probably won't install much of anything to it ...... I have learned my lesson the hard way). Question is.........

I want all of my Doc's to Go stuff and my Palm Desktop info to transfer over seamlessly.

Am I going to be able to break the LifeDrive out of the box, plug it in to my current desktop and have everything (Doc's to Go and Palm Desktop stuff) transfer over without a hitch ....... in theory? Or is it much more complicated than this?

With any luck ...... this will be the last you'll hear of me ..... I'm getting to old to keep installing and uninstalling third party stuff (I'm getting grey hair b/c of it)!!!

Thanks!!!

Install the new desktop software and follow it's lead.

Depending upon which version of DTG is on the old desktop and what's on the new LD will depend upon what happens. The DTG stuff probably won't make it over during the initial load and you'll probably have to install that component from the installation disc as an "extra" after you get through the initial hot sync.

Here is my one suggestion to avoid problems: rename your user backup directory to oldbackup. The folder that I'm specifically talking about should be: C:\program files\palmone\your user name (or facisimile)\backup

Part of the installation process from a T3 to a LD will do this somewhat automatically but the backup directory will get restored to the LD which you don't want.

Your PIM data will go over during the first sync if you follow the above rename procedure.

Then you can take these other programs and add the to the LD from this renamed backup folder, one at a time or two at a time and only take those files that you know are paired to a specific program that you want on the LD.

This process will cause you to have to reregister your programs but this is goiing to happen no matter what because many of the programs store there registration data in a saved preferences file which will go away anyway because of this hardware change.

O.K.- I'm getting there. I think I may have installed something that was not compatible b/c when I now tap the "home" icon, I get a reset. I have started from scratch .......... it is in my office charging now.

One question for you (Moose) or anyone else that may be reading......

How slow should it be? I have read about being slow but this LD I just purchased is WAAAAYYY SLOW ...... painfully slow. Could it have been that it wasn't fully charged? I doubt it- didn't think I lack of battery charge could cause that.

However ...... if it is this painfully slow tomorrow a.m.- she's going back to the store :o( Shame, b/c I need the space of the 4 G's.

The crash on tapping the "home" icon worries me too (b/c I had only installed just the basics (so built in application replacements).

Any thoughts on all this craziness?

BTW ..... What happened to the LifeDrive forum? There are two thread there ....that be it :o)

Speed will pick up based upon the programs you use the most. The LD has a virtual RAM that puts the programs that you most into that Virtual RAM so that they are accessed quicker.

But lets say a program that normall takes two seconds to load - well the LD, as memory serves me - would take 4.

If your doing a hard reset to the LD to restore - be certain to rename that backup directory as I stated or you'll bring something back in that's still in conflict.

Older programs that would run on the T3 might not run on the LD without being updated.

Also - don't bring over the appslip rotate and the other DIA file that were part of the first "patch" to the T3 - they will cause an error as you described.

Good luck - I'll be out of touch for the next 10 days or so hopefully you'll get any other answers you need.
