Controversial Films Discussion

That was it! I can't believe Halle Berry was in it, but now that you mention it I remember James Caan in the promos. Oy!

Oh, yeah - I'd forgotten about that!

Hmm...as I recall it was because 1) the director's cut was so graphic and 2) it was based on the book, which was controversial. The same was true of American Psycho, which was by the same author.

What about Show Girls?
I never saw it but I remember all the controversy and noise about it being the first official NC-17 film and whether or not theaters would play it. I guess it was so lame it sort of difused the fuss (but as I said, I haven't seen it, just heard that it was uber-crap...you know, I think I might rent that just to see for myself...)

I actually liked Saw. I'm not usually a fan of those kind of films. Too gory for me. But I guess I'm more of a fan of how they present it with a brilliant whodunnit plot.

in a word yes....this is what i said about 'mysterious skin' after seeing it in the later part of may....this was originally posted on another thread that deals with "gay" themed movies...

"It's designed to bring joy to the world." Oh Seth Rogen.

Can't say I'm surprised though. I mean, it's Utah. :look: :P

Wasn't The Rules Of Attraction pretty controversal? You know, with how dark it was, and all of the sex, drugs, and that suicide scene. Im not sure, i didn't pay attention when the movie first came out. But i would imagine it was be controversial.

Even using the word, "Most," is speaking for people you don't know, and in my personal experience you are grossly overstating the case. I don't know a single person who decided not to see the film because they felt it, and the people who made it, were "pushing religion down people."

I don't know where you live, but if it's in the US I find it hard to believe that anyone you know really felt that way, either, although I fully admit that it is possible...just not probable.

And as I said in my qualification (in the later post), I'm specifically referring to Mel Gibson's personlly profitting off of the portrayal of the suffering of Christ. I find that beyond disgusting on so many levels (particularly the "Passion Nails" which are so abhorant that they're beyond description, but also because I honestly believe that Mel Gibson, like any director, is manipulating the world - and for so many other reasons which are personal and which I don't care to discuss...).

I honestly don't have problems with movies about Christ, or any religious figure, for that matter. They can be extremely educational, even uplifting, as long as they're done responsibly and in good taste (by responsibly I mean with as much historical accuracy as absolutely possible, and by good taste I do not necessarily mean without a portrayal of violence or sexuality - it all just depends). A movie that's supposed to be religiously controversial, like The Last Temptation of Christ, is also acceptable to me.

I'm talking about this film and this director.

All that being said, I do NOT judge the people who got a lot out of the film or felt that it was a deeply spiritual experience for them. I would not feel the same way, given both my background in film-making and my knowledge and experience with Christianity, but who am I to judge those I don't know?

My objection is to those who make judgements: who judge me as well as other strangers.

As I'm a moderator at FF I will refrain from further comments on the matter for the time being because I want to stay as impartial as possible; anything else I might say right now would possibly be too personal.

If anyone would like to send me a Private Message, regardless of what you have to say - it's okay with me if we don't agree - then please feel free to do so.

I haven't seen Mysterious Skin but I love Gregg Araki's previous works, The Doom Generation and Nowhere, both very controversial in their own rights. I've read that Mysterious Skin made a bigger impact because it feels more mature. Would you confirm this?

Saw is incredibly sadistic, it's the whole premise. I haven't watched the sequels, I can't imagine the kind of stuff that goes down in them.

You're right, I'd forgotten that.

Mel's character in Signs was also a priest who was losing faith after his wife died so you could say he has been really bringing it home as far as movies go. Also, if I heard right he's planning a movie about the Pope's life... :goof:

I am in no way a Catholic but I never how Mel is losing himself in the wave of religious teachings. Maybe it had nothing to do with money, maybe it does now that he earned so much with Passion.

I'm a Christian, I think Passion is an important movie.

Apparently he's planning a movie on the Pope's life.

Rogen does have a point. Porn is graphic--too much for some people but honestly the Hollywood torture hype like Saw is worse.

Thanks. I'm going to go check it out. After reading the book I wasn't sure about the movie, but now that you said it's really well done I feel better about it. Cool.

Ah, yes - my friends and I debated this for quite a while when the movie first came out.

And your question is excellent - I think some of it may be because people were initially trying to keep the "secret" of the film, but you're right, given the recent case in the news I'm shocked that it hasn't brought attention to this film.

Many of my friends with kids were pretty annoyed that they hadn't known about the ending, not because they were against kids (older kids) seeing the movie, but because they would have prerred knowing ahead of time so that they could have discussed euthanasia and prepare them for the topic. I don't have kids but I didn't think their reactions were unjustified.

I'm going to have to think about your question because it's a fascinating one and I don't have any real initial response. Cool! :)

hi...i saw 'mysterious skin' a couple of months ago....it's one of my favorite films of the year so far.....if you were to visit the "Gay themed movies 2: "And they tell you its not natural." " thread on this board....i've posted my thoughts, more than once about this film....look at page #6......

Kelly - Thanks for posting the article about Mysterious Skin. Very interesting. Even more interesting because I picked up the book in Borders less than a month ago and read it. It said on the cover that it was going to be a movie that was coming out. I did wonder how it would translate to the big screen as it definitely deals with some very sensitive subjects. The book is very raw and well it's kind of hard to describe. It basically deals with 2 guys who were abused as children............one really loved and wanted the guy (a baseball coach) who abused him and it was something that went on for awhile. For the other boy it was a one time thing by the coach and it also involved the other boy. The boy that it happened to one time blocked it out and pretty much isolated himself growing up and had no interest at all in sex, etc. The other boy grew up kind of obsessed with sex and even turned tricks, etc. They were both messed up because of what happened to them. The book follows the journey of both boys and on the way they find each other and end up dealing with their past. I actually really liked the book but for a movie I just don't know. I can definitely see it being a controversial film.

Ok, thank you for your opinion. And ITA, really, the only person who can jugde if a movie is right for them is themselves. :D
