contacts sync error "...currently experiencing problems..." with red exclamation

This issue IS NOT about your initial sycn with the google servers or initially getting all you contacts to the G1

My G1 has been setup and has been working quite well for some time. However, I happend to go to the "Data syncronization" settings randomly, and my "Contacts" setting has the sync icon with a red exclamation mark right next to the on/off checkbox. At the bottom of the screen it reads "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly."

However, it has been like this for several days...in fact, the "Contacts" settting shows that the last sync occurred on 10/29/2008, so apparently, it hasent sync'ed since then.

Anyone else have this issue, or know of a fix?

Thanks for the help.

OK. I just restarted as you suggested. Same error shows up for Contacts only.

Also, I did this test:
1 - I added a new contact via my PC to my gmail account.
2 - I forced my g1 to sync by deselecting then reselecting the sync option for Contacts.

The new contact DID in fact show up on my g1 as if the sync was successful, but it still listed the same error message with the red exclamation point next to the sync icon next to the Contacts setting only.

So, I reversed it:
1 - I deleted the foney contact on my g1.
2 - I forced my g1 to sync as I did above.
3 - I checked via my PC my gmail account and...

The foney contact DID in fact get deleted, but, same error is listed on the phone.

So, I think it is syncing, but the error still bothers me. What is is missing such that it thinks there is an issue? I have 385 contacts, and I don't want to go through each one to be sure its syncing correctly.

Thanks for the input.

starang . . . any resolution on this issue? I am having the exact same situation. The G1 contacts sync, but I am getting the error msg and red exclamation that you described. Plus the "last sync'd date" shown in the settings menu is not being updated.

I had this issue, and it started from using MyBackup- I had grabbed the contacts from the SD card after a backup, and then tried to do a gmail sync.. then i got that error.

Basically, it wiped out my gmail contacts and now i can't sync with gmail anymore.

I never figured out a solution- luckily i only have about 20 contacts.. so here's what im gonna do:

1) Enter all my 20 contacts back into gmail BY HAND from my desktop.

2) Save another, new Backup.

3) Factory reset

4) Restore phone using MYBackup but DONT select contacts... just everything else.

5) Sync contacts on newly reset and restored phone with gmail and hope those hand-entered contacts sync over.

Basically, if you try to restore your phone with contacts off the SD from mybackup, and then sync to gmail, you could run into a disaster.

This isnt very clear in the app- they just say "dont use both" without telling you exact what that means or what your're supposed to do- I didnt really get what they were saying until it was too late, and ive seen a few people who did the same thing.

Hope you didnt lose too many contacts.. they should at least still be on the SD card.

I'm opting for going with Gmail Sync for contact restore rather than MyBackup.. at least on gmail I can export the contacts and save them on my harddrive. I'd rather have my contacts saved in the cloud than on one physical SD card that could get lost or damaged.

Interesting point about MyBackup. I have that app installed on my G1 but I have only used it to back up items other than Contacts. I have never used it for contacts and have never restored anything with it. So I don't think my problem is related to this app.

Nah I had this problem way before I got mybackup app . So that's not the problem .but why can't we use mybackup and gmail sync at the same time?

i just tried the myfaves method.. it did indeed delete my local contacts, which
i then restored from the sd card using mybackup.. BUT when i went to sync
with gmail, it took 10 minutes and i ended up with th exclamation error.. no contacts made it from my g1 to my gmail, even after the 10 min wait.. this happens every time now

You need to clear your MyFaves data, then *don't* restore contacts using MyBackup. Just let your phone sync with Gmail.

If you restore contacts from MyBackup then you'll get the error every time your phone tries to sync with Gmail.

I also got this error while manually syncing my calendar (I did it this way because it hadn't done the auto sync like it should have...odd). It took several attempts to "manually sync" by clicking menu then sync now. The process took a 5 minutes and finally worked, but error kept coming and going.

Hahaha well, that would be a viable solution if this error hadn't already *deleted all my gmail contacts*

the only place i have them is now on the SD card :/

Looks like I'll be re-entering them into gmail by hand as i mentioned in my first post..

I had the same problem. My backup screwed things up. My phone worked fine. I used mybackup formated the phone. then restored my backup. I resynced after done it deleted my gmail contacts but kept all in my phone. Now i kept getting contact syncing errors none of my contacts would be sent to my gmail. if i made a new phone contact it would not be added online. but if i added a new contact in gmail it would be sent to my phone. the only solution was to delete all my phone contacts, Readd them all online and sync back to the phone now it works fine. my backup screwed something up. i wouldnt use it again.

yeah sometimes I get a partial sync.. Z through H for example.. other times it syncs and I get the error and I have duplicats on both my phone and gmail. I'm totally disgusted at the moment.
