Contact phone number dropping area code when messaging

We are new to Android OS (Samsung Captivate on AT&T) and have setup only two contacts. Both contacts trigger calling properly. Both have the area code setup on the contact's phone number. On one contact when I click the message button when I see the number for the contact I'm messaging, the area code is dropped and the message fails. The other contact includes the area code when messaging and the message goes through.

I've tried deleting the contact and re-entering it several times to no avail.

I searched the forum and found some stuff about problems with messaging to the wrong contact but nothing like my specific problem.

I really don't know what else to try but would greatly appreciate any ideas!

Welcome to the forums cabikefreak. Yes - unfortunatley this is a well known problem with the Samsung Galaxy S range of phones. I've not seen a solution yet. It'll probably be a firmware update that's required.

Thanks extorian! What is confusing is how the heck it always does this to one particular phone number. We've added some others that work fine but no matter what things we try when setting up a contact for this number we get the same result.

Is there something different in the number? Most of the problems people have seem to be related to the area code. Some use the full number beginning with a + character, where as some numbers a national, and some are local with no area code.
