Here are two examples of how camera clubs do it. There are many variations and their rules are listed on line:
Scoring is on a basis of 10 marks: three (3) for technical merit, three (3) for composition and four (4) for impact, from each of three judges. Based on these criteria, each judge is free to give a total score from 1 to 10. Judges will not always agree when scoring, nor should they, as long as the individual judges can justify their chosen scores rationally. During the scoring, judges will be informed immediately when there is a difference of 4, or more, points in any score. The Competitions Committee Chair will interrupt the scoring and ask the three judges to discuss the image among themselves, and to re-score the image. Scoring of the other images will then resume.
As guidelines for judging, an entry with a score of 5 points means that the image does not have any major faults but at the same time does not have any significant strengths and has little or no impact. Entries with less than 5 points indicates that these images have serious technical and/or compositional flaws and have no impact. (Impact is the viewer’s initial response to a stimulating image and is the WOW! or AAH! factor of an image.) Photographs with more than 6 points means that these images have impact based on various factors such as mood, imaginative work, subject matter and are above average in terms of technical merit and composition.
Judging Criteria for Club Competitions.
To make judging easier and less time consuming at each meeting I have decided that we will select two judges at each meeting to do the honours, you will all get a turn to be a judge.
1. How Technically Correct is the Photo? (20)
Are the following the best they can be? Focus, Sharpness, detail, depth of field, colour, brightness, contrast, saturation, usage of light.
2. Subject Matter / Content (20)
How well does it fall within the brief/assignment?
Creativity.
3. Composition (20)
Does the photograph tell a story?
Where is our eye lead to in the photograph?
Is the photograph balanced, if not, is it creating the visual impact it should?
4. Do I like this photograph? (All Else Aside) (40)
Like all art this is dependent on our own tastes, likes, dislikes and the way we see the world and experience it. It has nothing to do with how experienced photographer is. (Unfortunately)
TOTAL = (100)
