Connection, a Must for Android phones?

I am currently using iPhone and am thinking of migrating to Android sometime in the near future. I have read all the pros and cons and prepared. However, I can't seem to find an answer to this one simple question.

Seeing that a significant portion of Android phones' apps are Google based (for the basic productivity apps anyways), will I need a internet connection from the carrier to make the phone worthwhile?

I ask this because on my iPhone, I don't really use data and don't have a data plan. I mostly use the notes, calendar, contacts, alarm, calculator, and a few other data-apps that I use when in wifi range.

Android's apps core apps seem Google based (calendar, contacts, etc...) Does that mean I can't use these functions without a data plan?
