Connecting Sony speakers to Receiver (Red & Black wires)?

Hey guys,

Well, I'm only 18, and I honestly do not know much about this stuff, but I have two fairly large Sony speakers, and each of them have two wires. A red one and a black one for each. They came with an old (maybe late 90's) Sony receiver box which have the little black and red wire clamps. (Where you push the clamp to open it, put the wire in, release clamp)

Anyways, you know how when you play a song, there is a left and a right soundtrack to it? Like, if you have an iPod, the left earphone doesn't sound the same as the right earphone?

Well, I know my songs well, and for some reason, I can only get my speakers to play the left half of the song, and I can't hear some of the instruments that would play if they were both on.

I've tried rearranging the black and red wires in different slots, but I can't get them both to play at the same time.

The slots are like so (colors in brackets are different color slots):

L ----------------------- R
A [red] [black] ||| [black] [red]
---------------------------------------
B [black] [red] ||| [red] [black]

On the front panel, I have it selected to play both A and B, so I assume that means the top is A and the bottom is B.

I've tried plugging reds into reds, blacks into blacks, they just don't work! Is my box defective? I'm sorry if I sound stupid, but I'm not knowledgable in this kind of stuff.
