Connecting laptop to tv?

im connecting my laptop to my tv with the regular cord for a tower to be connected to a monitor. it worked fine at first but then something popped up and i randomly clicked ok. then everything switched back and it stopped working. what did it do? how do i undo it? my laptop is an acer aspire with windows vista. thanks
