Connecting DVI / HDMI to Panasonic TV for monitor?

I’m helping a coworker set up a desktop computer to a nice new Panasonic flat-screen tv; she wants to project from the computer onto the tv for demonstrations (no need for television capability). Computer is fairly new Dell with Windows XP pro (downgrade), and has an ATI video card with a DVI port and an S-video port. Television has numerous inputs, including several HDMI ports, RCA ports, and others… Monitor has DVI connection as well as the standard HD15 cable.
Right now, she has a Y-cable going from the DVI port on the PC which converts to DVI and hooks to the monitor and a long monitor cable (about 20 ft) that goes to the television. The quality stinks. The driver software for the ATI card only sees that it has some anonymous monitor out there so is running at the most generic settings. I think quality could improve tremendously if we were to go from the DVI to the HDMI port with a DVI-HDMI cable. However, not having done this before, I’m eager for insights and feedback. Would love to hear your recommendations on how to set this up!
