confused about elevated alkaline phosphatase in bloodwork

Hello,
I am new here. I am a mother of two children one who I am still breastfeeding at 9months. I recently had rectal bleeding and had bloodwork done. It came back with an elevated alkaline phosphatase of 137 the reference being 3-129. I am scared because I have read it is a tumor marker for elevated enzymes from the liver or bone. I had a colon polyp removed and am waiting for biopsy. The doctor said he thought it was ok but would send off. I am a 37 year old female and really worried about this elevation of Alkaline Phosphatase. I have seen other references that indicate 70 is high and mine is 137! anyone out there with insight would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Sometimes reference ranges are different laboratory to laboratory, so you may see different numbers. Bone cancer would cause sky high ALP.

More likely causes of a high-normal or mildly elevated ALP are gallbladder trouble, blocked bile ducts, hypothyroidism*, vitamin D deficency, medications like the common antibiotic Erythromycin and the sleep aid Ambien like Laura mentioned. Levels tend to be significantly higher in pregnant women so maybe your ALP level isn't going up, it might be going back down! :)

*possibly postpartum thyroiditis
