Concerning an Employment Retaliation Under California Law & Statute of Limitations?

This concerns retaliation at a place of employment and I am asking how the law works in the State of California. I was terminated immediately after a garnishment was placed on my pay due to back payment of child support, which is illegal under California law. I have a Complaint with the Department of Labor Standards Enforcement, and there is a good chance that my Complaint will be upheld. The termination occurred late last Summer.

I am considering a lawsuit but prefer to wait until after results come back from the DLSE investigation. What is the statute of limitations on this type of retaliation? I am told that it is one year. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the investigation of the Complaint will be completed by then. Do I need to file a lawsuit to protect the statute, or is there some means of extension? I could file the lawsuit, but I don't want to case to move through the courts until my Complaint is acted upon. Can the action on the lawsuit be delayed until the DLSE is finished.

Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
