Hello Gang,

New to the forum. I have an '06 Ultra with the stock HK system.

I desperately want to upgrade the speakers. Does this model have an amp on it, or just a higher powered head unit ??

I really want something that I can CRANK up , with very little distortion.

Price is not really a concern, but I'd like to stay under a dime.

Thanks in advance !

GasCan, great job in the demonstration, thank you.
I have been waiting for something like this.
I think you will help Pez sell some more HogTunes.

I just wanted to clear a few things up. I noticed a couple different posts on here concerning speakers. It should be noted that buying a speaker does not make anything louder. The idea here is to get more CLEAN power to the speakers. Speakers can only provide so much help, if they are being powered by just a head unit (any aftermarket CD player-alpine, sony etc) they will not perform very well at all.

I can't comment on the HK systems in stock bikes, cause I have never monkeyed with one. But, I installed car stereos for almost 10 years and I can tell you that all those head units you see at Best Buy etc that say "40x4" and even 70watts x 4 are full of it. The in dash units only power source is coming from a tiny little IC chip inside the cd player. That is why when you put nice speakers in the fairing and crank up an alpine of sony cd player it can sound distorted and otherwise crappy. That speaker needs a true amplifier that is putting out continuous power, not a head unit that peaks at 40 or so watts per channel with 30% distortion.

This isn't meant as a dig against anyone btw, just wanted to try and help some people out who aren't sure about this technical mumbo jumbo.

My preference for my electra is the Biketronics Titan amp. This baby rocks. I have the Biketronics 6.5" ordered and can't wait. The J&M don't seem to be worth a crap.

Anyone else notice the J&M speakers seem to be flawed in design? The grills ride right up against the surround on the speaker. When you turn it half way up, the speakers slap against the grill causing horrible sound and tearing up the driver. What water head designed these????

My eperience is the Hog Tunes give a little better sound, but without putting an Amp in as well, you really are not getting enough improvement. I find the Road Glide needs more help as the distance of the fairing is further and there is more road noise. I get better sound on the Ultra with the stock system than with the Hog Tune speakers on the Road Glide.

I am now going to upgrade the Road Glide system and this thread has been great information!

While the stock head units in the late model Harman Kardon are rated for 40 watts, it is a known fact that they only deliver about 17watts rms per side. Upgrading speakers to those of the Hogtunes or Biketonics product will deliver clearer sound, it does not boost wattage.

It is true that aftermarket head units are also low power, but the big gain there is iPod control and feature capabilites. With that being said, any purist looking for better sound on a Harley is best off adding an amplifier which then delivers pure sound and clean power. This will clean up any distortion and deliver the type of signal that speakers can perform with. Just be cautious that you match the amplifier to the speakers and vice versa. Hogtunes has a new amplifier on the market, and Biketronics has the new UcD amplifiers which absolutely rock, but should be matched to their Titan Hertz speakers if you're going that route. These Italian made speakers are very efficient and will handle the true power offered via the Biketronics UcD Titan amplfiers.

It doesn't come without cost, but quality seldom does.

I upgraded the original radio on my 94 FLHTC with the " Biketronics " Radio kit with the Sony Marine radio and Hertz 80W speakers. The radio has the AVC that works with the handle bar controls. My kit cost about $530 shipped and I installed it myself. I am well pleased with it. I hear it clearly at 70-80 mph. My Supertrap mufflers aren't really loud and I'm sure that helps some. I have a Serious radio plugged into it also. Many choices to listen to. An excellent product for the money.
