For Northern Vietnam, the idea of communism was coming from China. Northern Vietnam revolved around farmers as did China. So when leaders promised more land to peasants, they grabbed onto the idea of communism. So the leaders promoted communism as a form where farmers could be in control of how country was run because agricultural community would be the basis for it.
Compare this to the problems North Vietnam had with French Colonies prior to the split. The French promised freedom but everything (ruling, way of life, etc.) would be dictated by them. This annoyed the locals who wanted more of a say in how things were. Plus, if peasants were the majority in that country, they wanted their issues and rights to be noticed by leaders.
In fact, this issue was evident between North Vietnam and Russia where the former did not want Russians to be the main controlling force either. And 'village culture' was important to Vietnamese unlike what Communist Russia was proposing.
