Commercials

Anyone here a fan of classic commercials from the 80's and early 90's? Commercials such as Time for Timer, psa's like ones with Woodsy Owl and others greats from McDonalds helped to make Saturday mornings what they were back then. Remember all those great cereal commercials back in the day?? How fun were they!

What are some of your faves from today or yesterday?

You just read my mind. Being a kid of the 80's, I've enjoyed seeing commercials of toys, video games, cereal and food. They were all nostalgic and memorable back then. The commercials of today.....Its not like they're trying to do something original and most of them are mean-spirited.

Well, those weren't technically commercials. They were PSAs (Public Service Announcements), but were nonetheless still enjoyable. Also, Timer and Woodsy the Owl debuted in the 1970s, not 80s.

Incidentally, Timer appeared in 2 specials, both 60 minutes long: The Incredible, Indelible, Magical, Physical Mystery Trip (1973) andThe Magical Mystery Trip Through Little Red's Head (1974). Both specials were animated by Depatie-Freleng Studios.

True, Timer and Woodsy debuted in the 70's but they were played heavily in the 80's and slightly into the 90's. Both characters helped to shape the 80's for me.

Anyone remember the McDonalds commercial where Ronald played basketball against the McNuggetts or the commercial where they helped Birdie learn to fly ? Classic!

The only 2 commercials they played yesterday during Saturday morning cartoons I enjoyed were the Fruit Loops one where Tucan dived underwater and the Pop Tarts one where the pop tart was singing the blues, both were played multiple times. Where is Ronald McDonald these days, or the Honey Smacks frog, Dig Em'? How about the Trix Rabbit or with Quick Rabbit?

The Trix Rabbit is still making commercials. The Quik Bunny was the victim of corporate takeover: he's the Nesquik Bunny now, get it right. J/K. The Nesquik Bunny still appears on the bottles, but he hasn't been in any TV ads for a while.

I forgot about that, I miss the days when it was Nestles Quick and not Nesquick. Remember the commercial where he was playing baseball? At lease he is still on the packaging.

I love this place, great discussion!

I loved Mac Tonight! He was used as a way to get adults into seeing McDonalds as a good place for eats and not just for kids.

"When the clock strikes half past six babe, time to head for the golden lights. It's a good time for the great taste...dinner, at McDonalds it's Mac Tonight!"

YouTube is a great place to see tons of commercials from the 70s, 80s and 90s. I have over 100 bookmarked.

I know there must be others here who share the same love for classic commercials, don't be shy.

How about the R2D2 smoking psa, or the "Be an original" psa with the guy inthe leather jacket and hat singing, with neon lights, skateboarders and dancers all over the place. McDonalds, Toys R Us, Encyclopedia Britanica, WWf toys......the list is endless!

Ronald McDonald is on life-support and his friends are long gone, the Honey Smacks frog doesn't appear on commercials anymore (only on the cereal box), Ditto with the Quik/Nesquik Rabbit and Barney doesn't steal Fred's Pebbles cereals anymore.
I also noticed the lack of Captain Crunch commercials recently.

Someone I know told m today that he thinks he read somewhere that McDonalds is not allowed to advertise characters that would make young kids want to eat there. He said it was due to some lawsuit or something. Probably obesity issues. If you treat your kids to mcdonalds every once in a while I don't see the issue.

I miss the fruity pebbles commercials with the Christmas one being my fave. They need these characters on air to help sell their product!

Well, in their defense, Fruity/Cocoa Pebbles has been milking that campaign for well over a decade. There's only so many variations that one can do on the "Watch me trick Fred out of his Pebbles!" shtick.

The Flintstones characters ares still appearing in Pebbles cereals ads. They never left.

The parents of america needed a scapegoat because kids were getting fat, and our favorite mascots were it. Because, you know, it's not the PARENTS place to put their foot down and make their kids eat healthy, it's the corporations that have to raise the children.

It really is up to the parents to raise their kids on a healthy diet and take them to places like McDonalds for special occassions. I ate at McDonalds maybe once or twice every couple of months, no harm. Parents do seem to use every excuse in the book before they blame themselves. Sad really. That doesent sum up all parents just some.

True, just the irresponsible ones. It's a shame, really, Ronald & The gang had some great commercials back in the day. I guess something really could kill the Grimace.

My fave Ronald McDonald commercials were the ones where he plays basketball against the mcnuggetts, the Christmas one where he was ice skating with the kids, the Halloween one with the mcnuggetts and the one where Birdie learns to fly.

My fave McDonaldland ad aired in '74, where the hamburglar was accused of stealing McDonald's hamburgers and was put on trial for doing so. Mayor McCheese was the judge. The hamburglar was convicted and was sentenced to a week with no hamburgers.

The Air Jordan/Hare Jordan ads for Nike. Those maintained the energy of the Looney Tunes shorts.
The Shaq commercial for Pepsi in which Woody Woodpecker cameoed. It was well-animated.
The Mighty Mouse cheese ad. It was funny for the irony-a meteor was coming, and people tried to get him to go take care of it and MM is stuffing his gullet with cheese.
The Capital One ad with Underdog. It was unspected to see him pop up at the end.
The Looney Tunes AFLAC ad. It was well animated and older people could relate.
The Popeye Tropicana Ad. It was a very clever use of the characters.
The Ad for Sweet and Low with the Pink Panther. It was well-animated.
Those car ads with Yosemite Sam and Taz. Those were well-designed-it made me believe those characters were there.
The Looney Tunes ads for McDonald's. Those well well-animated and choreographed.
The Roger Rabbit ads for McDonald's and Coke. They were well-animated and choreographed.
