It amuses the hell out of me when some fundie compares the complete lack of evidence that Jesus existed by stating there is no evidence that Lincoln or Columbus existed. I mean, come on people!

So, in an effort to educate these fundies could you all please list here some evidence that Lincoln existed.

Then list the evidence that Jesus existed.

Could anyone with common sense compare the two?

Eh?

How do you know Jesus didn't exist?
God doesn't exist, but some crap fool calling himself son of gods may have existed, who knows?

Jesus never left any evidence of his existence (personal writings, possessions, etc.). There is no documented evidence of the existence of Jesus that was recorded during the time that Jesus was alive. Everything written about him was written decades after he had passed. For someone to be such an important figure for all of humanity, you would think there would be some kind of evidence of his life that could be traced to the actual time of his existence. But there is none. No piece of furniture that he made as a carpenter. No clothing, toys, tools, or anything passed on to younger family members. No personal journal writings. No mentioning of him by anyone who knew him, saw him, or heard of him. Nothing until years after his death. All of a sudden these stories started popping up about this guy they used to know.

There are literally thousands of photographs (including the original glass plate negatives) of Lincoln.
We have thousands of eyewitness accounts of Lincoln from sources all over the world that all agree completely on his existence. We have letters and papers in his own handwriting that agree with the writings of other people on the timing of actual events. If there were only 1 single person (or even a dozen) from a small group that claimed Lincoln lived, we could (and should!) be skeptical -- but with such a wide body of evidence from thousands of different sources that all agree, the establishment of his existence is pretty clear.

There is, of course, the ultimate proof: we have his body. It's obviously decayed and isn't much more than bones by now, but we know where it is and it could be exhumed and examined at any time.

We have none of those things for jesus. We have four stories (and a few others that the christians claim are erroneous) called gospels, all written well after his death and all by people who never met him in person, and that's it. No historical records outside of the group christians (and no, the one-sentence mention in josephus isn't reliable evidence and has been shown to be a later addition), no eyewitness accounts, no photographs, no body, no corroborating evidence of any kind.

Peace.

Jesus - the Bible (all second hand accounts)

Abe - Many, many, many letters by himself, his contemporaries, his successors, his predecessors and his opponents, newspapers, his own writings, police records, birth/death records, photographs, people who met him and wrote about him, records of presidency, his grave, signatures, surviving clothing, buildings and personal possessions, no evidence or claims to the contrary

EDIT - Socrates? Aristotle? Plato?

Easy, people who called themselves these names wrote stuff which was later copied and survives today. Whether or not they existed is immaterial (they may not have done for all I know) but the knowledge and wisdom somebody recorded in their name is what matters.

You can find truth and wisdom in the Bible without believing in Jesus and God. I share some of the morality, I belive there is some genuine history there and I appreciate some of the poetry and philosophy. Just as with plato et all it is the message that is important and not the messenger.

There is hearsay about Lincoln, but NO, there is no 100% proof of his living. Can you show me some? didn't think so.

I'm a christian and I believe that Jesus existed and I'm going to have to agree with you on the part about proof of Columbus and Lincoln, there is plenty of proof they existed, I don't know why anyone would say otherwise. That is a rediculous statement. And who ever is claiming it is making themselves and Christians look bad, and that makes me very angry.
As far as proof I don't feel a need to prove any of them existed, I know they did and that is enough for me.

Tons -- Obama will even be using Lincoln's Bible during the inauguration, in fact...

I've never really looked to see the 'proof' of Lincoln b/c theree's plenty written about him and by him. There are contemporary first hand accts.
Jesus has a bunch of 2nd hand accts that are written after his death. But, ironically, I got a book on Aesop's Fables and his actual existence is undocumented. But, the moral of the stories are still recorded and written down-whether or not an actual human lived named Aesop that told the stories...that's not the important part...unless you're into antiquities.
Anthony B- Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, Siddharta Buddha, if no evidence of them is ever found, it would not disprove the existence of an entity that's supposedly active in each person's life. The teachings are still relevant. Savvy?
