Combining comedy and novelty ties with sharp suits?

For sixth form at my school (which translates into the final two years of high school, if you're American) everyone has to wear formal suits instead of school uniform, which is brilliant because it means I don't have to wear a green skirt ever again. So, I have four blazer-and-trousers-and-waistcoat combination suits varying from light grey to black. I hate wearing open neck blouses, so I'm wearing fitted shirts with a proper buttoned collar, ergo a tie.

I've already bought my winter suits (because it's freaking freezing in England), and I'm going to get ties and shirts soon. I'm going shopping tomorrow with an opportunity to buy ties. So, do I combine ties with skulls and rainbows and books and chemistry equipment and doctor's equipment, et cetera, with my suits?

Oh, and I have an award ceremony coming up in about two months, and I intend to wear the black pinstripe for it. Novelty tie or sensible tie? The ceremony is for a university writing award so I can look eccentric if I want.
