com.android.mms and com.android.phone crashing.

This has lasted a few weeks now, and I've noticed I receive errors when opening most online applications, like Facebook and Tweetdeck. Could it really be a large MMS?
I really don't want to take this back for a new phone, as o2 expect me to send it off for 2 weeks, and pay more than a month's contract for the Desire to use a rubbish phone for that period of time.

Yes. It would explain the large amount of data appearing in the messaging application even shortly after clearing the data. If you're receiving it over 2G then your phone won't be able to use a data connection for anything else, which would explain the other apps crashing.

However... it would help if you told us what the crash was when opening these other apps? What does it say?

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, I get the above message too. The only option is one button, "Force Close".
I upgraded my Samsung Galaxy 3 5800I from Eclair 2.1 to Froyo 2.2. It is not a supported upgrade, I just pulled some stuff off the net. I really like some aspects of the new interface.
Samsung NZ has not yet seen fit to offer the official upgrade, even though in other countries it is an upgrade option available and is managed through the Kies software.

So I guess I am paying for my impatience! On trying the clear data option I notice two things
1 There is not in fact an app installed called com.android.mms. Instead, there is a process called "Messaging version 2.2".
2 It records a total of 0KB of data after I have cleared messages so unlike previous posts it is clearing data OK.

After clearing data, I tried to send a test message. Some sort of message in a box popped up on screen but closed very quickly so I've no idea what it said.

So, in a nutshell, I cannot receive mms messages, although AFAIK messages I write are going out OK but can't be sure.

I'm hoping that over the past few months since the last post in this thread, someone has encountered a fix for this? Otherwise it might have to be the old "Factory reset" which presumably would put me back to 2.1, something I am reluctant to do. But ability to text is not negotiable!

com.android.mms is just the Java style name (the path to the class, if you're interested) for that application. What you see will be a more friendly name like "Messaging". In some lists, such as in Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications, you often see a list of names like com.android.mms for a short time until the phone has managed to get through the list of all of your applications and look up the friendly names, they'll then all change to "Messaging" or whatever.

Anyway, give you can send MMS messages OK, it sounds to me more like you've simply lost your APN settings during the upgrade. They're in Menu -> Settings -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names. You will need to find the correct ones for your network on the internet, or log on to your network's website and there is often a link to get them to send the settings directly to your phone. Alternatively if you give them a call they can do that too. Just tell them you need them to send you the MMS settings for your phone.

Hi,
finally resolved this issue - I did a factory_data_reset. This did not remove the new OS, just rest all settings to default, presumably. I'll have to import all my contacts again. BUT the main thing is that SMS now works!
And even better the phone is now on Froyo 2.2 which seems to work better in a number of ways. Wonder if Samsung will ever offer 2.2 for Galaxy 3s in New Zealand?

Thanks Extorian for your assistance.
