com.android.mms and com.android.phone crashing.

So Blessed

New member
Hi. I got my Milestone on friday and been playing with it, installing some apps, learning to use it.
I sometimes want to open the sms app to read a message, and a window appears saying that com.android.mms app crashed. Same happens with the com.android.phone app.
When that happens, I have to restart the phone and it works again. Any ideas?
What should I do to try to fix it?

Thanks,
Rodrigo.

Message says:

Sorry!
The application Messaging (process com.android.mms) has stopped unexpectedly.
Please try again.

Same for .phone app.
No specific situations that I notice.

Rodrigo.

Hi Rodrigo - welcome to the AC Forums.

When it happens, do you have more than one button you can press (such as Wait and Close)? Or do you just have the one button that says Close (or something similar)?

If you have two, then it's likely that it's just taking longer than normal, and hitting Wait will allow it to continue. This would imply that your phone is being slow for some reason (too many background processes running, too low on memory, too many contacts / messages to display when you run the app, etc).

If you just get the Force Close option, then something is wrong, and it certainly shouldn't be doing this. You could try a factory reset just in case something random happened in the early stages of setting it up.

Hi Extorian. I get the force close button only.
I tried resetting the messaging app as you indicate in the other thread but I can't find the Messaging app in the list. Even if it is working.

I should try a factory reset. Can you tell me the best way to back up the settings? (If there is any?) I have no problem in installing all the apps again, but I hate re-setting the system because I can't just write down all the changes I did, I don't remember them.
Or, well, maybe I shouldn't try to restore the settings after resetting the phone? Maybe the problems resides there? Any idea?

Thank you,
Rodrigo.

There are some apps that can back up your settings. I use My Backup Pro (which is a paid app), but there may be a free version that can back up the system settings too. I don't know exactly which settings it backs up, as it just says "System settings" in the huge list of stuff it can back up.

It's odd that you couldn't find the messaging app in the list. Is the app you use for text messages still called called "Messaging" on the Milestone? All the apps your phone uses should be in that list.

I resetted my Milestone to factory defaults. The list is empty when no app is installed and says that there is no third-party app installed.
com.android.mms crashed once but when I clicked it again it opened (normally it used to keep crashing until restart).

Will update when I know something.

Thanks,
Rodrigo

You could also do this...

Download Log Collector (the free one) from the Market. As soon as the messaging app crashes, run Log Collector. It will email you the system log. You could then copy and paste it here so that I can see if there's anything useful in it.

hello

i have a samsung galaxy s phone, and yesterday I upgraded it to android froyo 2.2, but now i cant send/receive any sms or mms, all that appears is a message that says: com.adroid.mms has closed unexpectedly.

i hope someone can help me plz

thankx.

Hrm - did the same here (upgrade to FroYo), but don't have that problem.

Try clearing the Messaging app data in Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications -> (wait 15 seconds or so for the icons to appear properly) Messaging (if you can't see it, select the All tab) -> Clear data. WARNING - You will lose ALL your messages if you do this.

Also try restarting the phone again.

thank u, i did everything that u said, but the problem remains... now sooner I reboot the phone that message com.android.mms appears on the display.

Are your contacts on Google? If so they'll sync back to your phone after the reset.

To be honest I don't know about the apps. Other Android phones I've seen factory reset keep their apps, but you may want to make a list just in case.

Hi there..
I also have a Samsung Galaxy S and yesterday I updated my phone to Froyo and it works very fine and faster than the earlier version. But the messaging part really has a bug.. I can open the message area but can't enter in any thread of messages neither can't send any message.

The solution was a factory reset? How did you do that, with keys software?

I's so disappointing how a native operation like messaging brings a bug into a almost perfect phone OS!!!!

Thanks in advance.

You don't use Kies to do a factory reset, you just go to Menu -> Settings -> Privacy -> Factory data reset.

I'd first try reseting just the Messaging app though with Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications -> Messaging -> Clear data.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but this is the only one I've seen with a similar problem to my own. I often get com.android.mms and com.android.phone crashes at seemingly random times. Sometimes there'll be hours between each crash, and sometimes my phone will crash repeatedly for 3 or 4 restarts.
I'm running Android 2.2 on an HTC Desire. Phone is about a month and a half old, and the problem started after around a month. I've never installed anything but basic apps from the Market (Tweetdeck, Facebook, Google Earth, Angry Birds) and there is no physical damage to the phone.
I've tried clearing the data of the messaging app several times, to no avail. I've tried alternatives such as Handcent, but it just experiences similar crashes. I've factory reset my phone 3 times, and it works for about an hour each time before the crashes begin again.
Any insight as to where I should go from here would be incredibly helpful. Thank you!

I've got some more insight into this issue which may or may not be helpful. Today I was looking for anything that was a sign my phone was about to crash, and paying particular attention to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Messages.
I've found that upon clearing data, my phone will work properly for a random period of time, before screwing up again. However, whilst monitoring this I noticed something strange. Every time I clear data, and open Messages again, the "Total" and "Data" sections display 8.00KB. However, when my phone crashes both of these sections jump to 816KB, and the messages cease to work until the data has been cleared again. The process repeats continuously.
I checked my friend's HTC Desire. He has about 3mb under his "Total" section, so I have no idea why mine is sticking at 816. I also have yet to see any numbers in this section other than 8 and 816. It's clear that this part of the issue.
