I rent a house with 3 other people. Our landlord owes the county a lot of money, and a couple of days ago my roommates and I were all issued individual writs of garnishment from an attorney asking us to pay our monthly rent to the county from now on. My question is, is this legal? Paying the court would be in violation of our lease, since we agreed to pay the landlord in it. Also, our landlord said that if we paid the court from now on, he couldn't afford to keep up our house anymore and would have to evict us for breach of lease. Is there any way we can get these writs of garnishment cancelled? We really haven't done anything wrong...
sorry, i should have been more specific. the writ was issued by a court, but the attorney of the defending party was the person who ordered it. also, i mistakenly said that our landlord owes the county a lot of money. he actually owes money to someone who won a previous case against him.
