colon resection

i am not looking forward to this at all, but it must be done.....there is plenty
of info on the web covering technical aspects, etc, but i want to know
what to expect afterward.....in terms of pain, my body's adjustment,
bowel incontinence and how to deal with it....and how long this
embarrassing problem is likely to last..........for example: can i go to the
opera or theatre without experiencing a sudden urge which i may not be able to control before i can get to a bathroom?

i realise we are all different, but i would very much appreciate a frank and
direct answer re what to expect.....i havent a clue!

many thanks for your help.

You will get more responses if you post on the Bowel Problems board. Several very long threads have been written over the years by people who have undergone the operation or are about to undergo it.

Recovery time depends tremendously on whether you surgery will be laproscopic or not. With a laproscopic procedure, some people have been known to return to work within a week (personally I cannot quite imagine it, but some people are driven!). With a full incision, recovery is generally expected to be 6 to 8 weeks.

I had the surgery 8 years ago and have been frequenting related internet boards since then. I have never heard of anyone having bowel incontinence/urgency problems last more than about a week after function returns. Your energy level will keep you from the theater/opera more than any bowel function worries. Reasonably, within about 4 weeks, you ought to be able to attend theater/opera performance (though my guess would be that you would prefer matinees for a couple of more weeks).

Good luck!
