College without a car and dating?

I'm in college and don't have a car right now and lots of people tell me it's not a problem but here is my question . I don't have alot of time to go to the mall and such but today I saw a girl returning with a bag from a store there and I have seen here before in the cafeteria. I don't know much about her. Anyhow, when I do see her again would it be weird to say that I saw her the other day and ask if she goes shopping alot and if she would want to with me sometime? I don't know why, but I have such bad luck with girls sometimes. I try very carefully to be calm and polite but maybe I seem weird or something. Going back to what I am asking, I don't see alot of American girls on the bus mostly foreign sudents who don't even speak English or students from other colleges around. I don't shop for clothes much (I'm mostly there to shop for movies since I am a film student) but I like hanging out with a girl and all for fun. I'm not sure how to approach her since she usually comes in with a couple other people and I don't know how to separate her to casually ask, any ideas?
