Cold Urticaria ....

After searching the internet high & low I am 100 % certain that my 14 yr old daughter is suffering from this condition . We have an appt at the allergist this Wed. The onset of this was rather sudden and really quite bizarre . I am wondering if anyone out there has has experience with this and any information would be appreciated . Thanks
 
Are you talking about her breaking out in hives after being exposed to cold temperatures like in the winter time? I've done that since I got frost bite as a kid...it can hit me all over but especially my knees, hips, upper arms and face.

Only thing that helps is bundling up and then warm showers when I come in.

Is that what is happening?

Actually it's when she goes in cold water (pools- ocean etc) She hives up like crazy . It seriously looks like she was whipped or something.The hives are long, red, itchy etc...Onset is usually soon after exposure. The duration, less than 2 hours.
But it is getting to the point that she does not want to go w/frienRAB to beach etc.... We have Dr.appt tomorrow...
She is fine w/hot water,hot tubs etc...This started out of no where last year ..very odd indeed. We really thought it was just pool water chemicals but nope it all cold water.Even rain.:(
 
That would be the same thing I have....I forgot about cold water because I won't go into cold water....I know what will happen. I grew up in Canada so I had lots of cold weather winters to cause it to start.

I'll be interested in what the doc says to do for it because I just get warm...I haven't found a way to stop it. But it is a real disorder.

Conversely, my son breaks out in hives from sun exposure, especially if he gets the slightest sun burn.

Hope she can find help other than just being told to avoid the trigger like I've been told.

Hi. So we went to the Dr. yesterday and basically he said to try to avoid going from one extreme to the other regarding temps.Welts/hives begin upon rewarming of body after cold exposure. He explained to us exactly what is happening in her body causing these welts/hives but also told us he/they do not know what actually causes this condition. He has put her on alegra so we shall see what happens. I asked him how common this is and he said...I see on the average 30 patients a day...I see 10 - 20 patients a year with this condition.so....Also being that the onset was sudden he suspects she will lose this in a few (5-6) years. He also said that the other ( like your son ) is not unheard of and actually he see more with that.
Hopefully the alegra will work and this will go as quick as it came. !
 
Glad you got an answer and I will try what he suggested....warming VERY slowly so as not to induce the hives.

I suspect some of mine has to do with frost bite as a kid...it was the 1960's and mini skirts and cold Canadian weather don't mix. Tons of frost bite.

But still....now that I think of it....if I do ignore the itching and let myself warm up slowly, it goes away faster than with rapid warming in a hot shower. Hmmmmmmm.
