Hi, I think I have cold hives, does anyone here suffer from this? Thanks for any advice.

I've had cold urticaria since I was a kid in New England. Never really did anything to treat it other than avoidance, benedryl and rapid heating if a hive just started.

I live in Florida now so that cuts down on the opportunity for cold weather. I still get hives though, when the temp dips below 40* in late Deceraber/early January.

Thank you AuntieLeela, I took antihistimines when I was going to the pool this summer, but other then that I don't take it on a daily basis. I am wondering if I am going to have to take them this winter. It gets very cold here where I live.
It is still fall here but on those chilly mornings I need to wear gloves and earmuRAB. I have a hard time touching anything cold as my hanRAB get very red and they burn, but like you said if I warm them up it doesn't last that long. Thanks again for taking the time to post.

I too have cold urticaria. Have you seen a dermatologist for consultation and done any tests yet?

Some people need more than 1 type of antihistamines to get the hives under control. For me, I'm fine with Loratadine. I also keep myself warm by wearing a jacket every where as most places that I go have air-conditioned.

If you have problems like swelling or angioedema, it will be good to have an epi-pen by yourself 24/7 in case an anaphylactic shock develops. It's a serious reaction and can lower your blood pressure, close up throat, etc very quickly. And the epi-pen helps to reverse those symptoms temporarily till you can get to the ER.

Take care and keep warm!

I suffer from cold urticaria. I never used to have it though when I was younger. I used to be on the swim team and swim in freezing water and play in the snow then in my late teens i developed it and antihistamines don't seem to work for me. Basically the only thing that works is staying out of the cold. It is very unfortunate but if it means no hives I'll do it.

I have a heredity case of Cold Urticaria. We know of four people in my family that have this allergy. My sister has the opposite of this, she breaks out because of the heat (as do I).

I am currently on a new medication called Xyzal. This is not really working for me (Most allergy medications do not, I have gone through Allegera, Claritin, Zyrtec, and have had allergy shots, none of which work).

Because of this allergy I have also been diagnosed with Acute Pernio. Which means that my capillaries aren't moving the right way. It occurs mainly in my feet but has spread to my fingers. My toes start out a light red, but they can become a dark red to purple and blue.

My doctor has told me that this is a rare allergy, however I have seen it pop up more and more lately.

Not only do I have the four family merabers that have this, but one of my frienRAB from a camp I used to go to has this as well. She however can not have really cold fooRAB such as Ice cream and she can not chew on ice, or her throat swells up.

Hopefully others will fare better than I have with this allergy.
